The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smilenov tries to clinch up but Francis circles away and keeps his distance.
Francis gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Francis scrambles and gets back to his feet.
Francis lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Smilenov closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Francis has had enough of the clinch but Smilenov keeps him there for the moment.
Smilenov has Francis pressed up against the cage in a tight Thai clinch. Francis is arching his back, trying to avoid the knees but a big one sneaks through from Smilenov - that's hurt Francis badly! Oh, another knee lands and Francis is covering up! The referee steps in to save him - possibly a bit early but Francis doesn't seem to be complaining.
