PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Aloysius Wiremu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Johnny Mathews (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Wiremu comes to the cage accompanied by Billy Joel - The River of Dreams. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Aloysius Wiremu!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Johnny Mathews!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Wiremu lands an overhand right.
Mathews misses with a jab to the body
enabling Wiremu to counter with a crisp jab.
Mathews takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Wiremu checks a low kick from Mathews.
Mathews jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Mathews pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Wiremu was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit.
We've been told by Wiremu's head coaches at Westside Martial Arts that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Wiremu throws a right and a left that Mathews avoids nicely.

Mathews throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Wiremu was covering up waiting for the punch and Mathews finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Mathews is looking to work some ground and pound but Wiremu has wrist control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mathews throwing strikes but missing.
Mathews throwing strikes from guard but Wiremu blocks nicely.
Mathews trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Mathews trying to control but Wiremu is working from the bottom.
Mathews throws a strike but Wiremu rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Mathews looking to control but Wiremu passes into half guard.
Wiremu throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Wiremu seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Mathews tries to get to full guard but Wiremu has control of the leg.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Wiremu controlling the action here.
Wiremu knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Mathews on the ground.
Mathews moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Mathews can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Wiremu controls the pace.

Mathews looking to control.
Wiremu wants to control from the top but Mathews keeps moving.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Mathews can do anything to dispel that myth.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Wiremu defending well as Mathews loads up on a big left hand.
Mathews takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Wiremu lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.

Wiremu cracks Mathews with a big right hand that sends him crashing to the floor. Wiremu has the opportunity to follow him to the ground but instead he's beckoning Mathews to stand back up!


Mathews is rocked!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Wiremu wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Wiremu is throwing punches like he's double parked. Oh my word! Huge right hand from Wiremu shuts the power down on Mathews. Lights out, game over! Wiremu is your winner.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:55 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Aloysius Wiremu!
