PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Cale Downes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Krabis Kropelis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Cale Downes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Krabis Kropelis!
The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Thiago Cunha and Edson Gomes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kropelis digs a good body shot into Downes's ribs.

Downes scores with a takedown into Kropelis's guard.
Kropelis is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kropelis manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Downes manages to get himself to full guard.


Downes looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Downes throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Kropelis escapes and throws Downes's legs to the side, diving into side control!

Kropelis thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Kropelis working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
Kropelis tries to move to mount but Downes blocks the move with his legs.
Downes is looking to regain half guard here but Kropelis keeps moving and retains side control.

Kropelis looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

Kropelis tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Kropelis wants to stand but Downes is controlling his arm.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Kropelis wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Downes, who protects the arm well.
Kropelis is looking to take a break and control but Downes is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Downes is trying to improve his position.
Kropelis wants to take a breather but Downes manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Kropelis.

Downes has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Kropelis can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Downes looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Kropelis has picked Downes up and slammed him! Downes can't keep hold of the triangle and Kropelis manages to pass to side control!
Kropelis is looking to take a break and control but Downes is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Downes is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Kropelis is looking to advance position but Downes won't allow it.
Kropelis is thwarting Downes's attempts to control the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Kropelis is keen to just control but Downes is a slippery customer.
Kropelis might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Downes haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Kropelis is pressing down on Downes's thigh, looking to free his foot. Downes is holding on for now.

Krabis Kropelis dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Downes shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Kropelis defends it nicely.

Downes seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym.

Kropelis has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Downes shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Kropelis as he jumps to the side.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Downes half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.

Kropelis wants to stand and escape but instead Downes has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Downes is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Downes thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Downes content to sit in guard, stalling... Great. Oh but he could get punished here because Kropelis has locked up a guillotine! Kropelis's face is contorted as he sqeezes tight on the submission attempt - will he finish? Downes is holding on here and Kropelis must be using up a lot of energy. Downes has gone limp! He's out! He's out cold! Kropelis gets to his feet, tossing aside his stricken foe. Arms raised, he milks the applause from the crowd. Great submission!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:56 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Krabis Kropelis!
After the fight, Krabis Kropelis was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
