PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Tantalus Flay (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gary Grice (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Flay comes to the cage accompanied by Outerspace- Revolution. Grice has chosen GZA - Shadowboxin' as his entrance music. Gary Grice told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 1 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 7 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Tantalus Flay!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 4 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, Gary Grice!
The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, John Kavanagh and Bruno Lombardi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Grice scores with a shot to the body.
Flay misses with a leg kick.
Flay throws out a loose jab but Grice uses good head movement to avoid it.
Flay lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Flay misses with a body shot.
Flay takes a swing at Grice's ribcage but misses.
A big left from Flay misses.
Flay steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Grice.
Flay throws out a loose jab but Grice uses good head movement to avoid it.
Grice doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Flay misses with a hook
and Grice counters with a nice low kick that buckles Flay's knee momentarily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Grice tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Flay was well out of range. Poor timing from Grice.
Flay changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Flay throws a body punch but Grice moves out of range.
Grice lands with an overhand left.
Grice leaves Flay with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Grice tries to land a front kick but Flay steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Grice throws a nice inside leg kick.
Jab, jab by Flay - just one landing.
Flay misses the shot to the body.
Flay throws a lazy uppercut
and Grice counters with a straight right hand.
Grice scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Flay doesn't seem bothered though.

Flay closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Grice tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Flay wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
You can see the frustration on Grice's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Flay tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.

Flay lands a decent elbow from side control.
Grice takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
Flay is chipping away with strikes.
Grice regains half guard, as Flay was trying to land strikes.
Flay sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Grice defending well though.
Flay thows a huge punch but Grice dodges it nicely.

Ground and pound from Flay.
Flay wants to take a breather but Grice is having none of it.
Flay has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Grice has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Flay is working away from the top position though.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Grice is pressing down on Flay's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Flay stands up over Grice, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Flay postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Grice is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Flay, into his guard.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Flay holds on and takes a little breather.
Grice scores with a decent looking elbow strike.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Flay wants to stand but Grice is controlling the position.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Flay looking to hit a scissor sweep but Grice is one step ahead there.
Grice is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Flay looking for a sweep. Not yet Flay, not yet.
Flay has control of Grice's left arm, preventing Grice from doing any damage.
Flay has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Grice tries to free his leg and advance position but Flay is retaining full guard.
Grice landing with the ground and pound.
Flay pulls Grice in to control the position.
Flay is trying to keep Grice in close.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Flay throws a body shot but no joy.

Flay darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Grice is controlling Flay's trapped leg to prevent Flay from advancing to side control.

That's six minutes gone in the round.
Let's hope that Grice has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Grice is looking for a sweep. Flay is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Flay winds up and cracks Grice with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Flay lands a nice short elbow.
The fighters are battling for position here. Grice manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Grice looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Flay slips nicely into half guard.
Gary Grice has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Flay throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Grice to regain full guard.
Flay working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Flay engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Flay postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Flay pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Grice is keeping the position for now.
Grice controls Flay momentarily but Flay frees himself.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Grice pulls Flay in close to prevent any damage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Flay loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Flay pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Grice is keeping the position for now.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Flay misses with a hook.

Grice gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Flay to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Flay throws a big elbow that misses.

Grice is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Grice is looking for a triangle but Flay pushes his legs off easily.

Flay is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Grice is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Grice has escaped and now he's on top!

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Flay is on top in guard.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Flay's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Grice utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

And that's the end of the fight!
Tantalus Flay showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Flay has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
