Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Cruz Frederick (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joy Hardy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Joy Hardy has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Cruz Frederick!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Joy Hardy!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Roger Salmon and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Frederick shoots for a takedown but Hardy saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Hardy thumps Frederick with a low kick.
Frederick stuffs the takedown.
Frederick is looking to counter with a shot to the body.

Frederick fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Hardy, pushing him back against the cage.
Frederick tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Hardy smiles and moves away.
Hardy darts in looking for a takedown but Frederick gets double underhooks and turns Hardy into the cage.
The fighters circle momentarily. Frederick darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.

Frederick tries to keep at a distance but Hardy has taken the fight into the clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Frederick fails to pull guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Cruz Frederick. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Frederick manages to break the clinch.

Hardy drives through with a takedown into guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Hardy wants to control from the top but Frederick keeps moving.
Frederick is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Frederick wants to stand up but Hardy is controlling him.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Frederick gets a clinch.
Frederick jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Hardy walks away with a smile on his face. Frederick gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

It looks like Cruz Frederick has been cut.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Frederick enables Hardy to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Frederick manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Hardy controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Let's hope that Hardy has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Hardy tries to free his leg and advance position but Frederick is retaining full guard.

Frederick controls Hardy momentarily but Hardy frees himself.
Frederick is trying to hold Hardy in close to prevent damage but Hardy has managed to pass into half guard.

Hardy takes a little break here. Frederick wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

Hardy is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Frederick is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Frederick is looking to regain half guard here but Hardy keeps moving and retains side control.

Hardy stands up and beckons Frederick to his feet.
Hardy changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Frederick tries to avoid it but Hardy manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Frederick to the ground. Frederick escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Frederick moves into range and clinches up with Hardy.
Hardy's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.
Frederick is trying to pull guard but Hardy turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Frederick controls Hardy momentarily but Hardy frees himself.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hardy rushes Frederick and presses him up against the cage.
Frederick jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Hardy walks away with a smile on his face. Frederick gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Frederick fails with a takedown attempt.

Hardy throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Frederick tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Hardy is in Frederick's guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Frederick has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Hardy can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hardy stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Frederick swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Hardy connects with a couple of short punches.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Hardy seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Frederick takes the fight into the clinch.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Hardy. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.

Hardy has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

We're seeing a lot of stalling here from Hardy.

Hardy manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Frederick on his heels. He'll look to pass Frederick's guard now, I'm sure.

Hardy is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Frederick has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here.

Hardy is persistently looking for the submission but Frederick is defending it well.
Hardy takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Frederick is trying to get back to his feet but Hardy has full control of the position and if anything, Frederick has just worked his way into a worse spot.

Cruz Frederick has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
