PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Geraldo Whitley (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Fedor Emelianenko (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Geraldo Whitley had a look across the cage there at his opponent. He definitely means business

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Geraldo Whitley!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Fedor Emelianenko!
The judges for this bout are Igor Prikhodko, Vladimir Khabensky and Ivan Kurochkin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Emelianenko swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Whitley counters with a three punch combo that has Emelianenko backing up. Emelianenko nods at Whitley to acknowledge the strikes.
Whitley could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Emelianenko circles away from the clinch attempt.
Whitley shoots in for a takedown but Emelianenko shows good takedown defense.
Whitley dives in and grabs Emelianenko's left leg, looking for a takedown. Emelianenko pushes down on Whitley's head and hops out.
Despite the aggression on Emelianenko's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.

Emelianenko fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Whitley to the ground. Emelianenko is now in Whitley's guard.
Emelianenko tries to free his leg and advance position but Whitley is retaining full guard.

Whitley is trying to control the position but Emelianenko postures up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Emelianenko with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

Whitley throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Emelianenko escapes and throws Whitley's legs to the side, diving into side control!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Whitley is not content to let Emelianenko control the position.
Whitley is looking to reverse the position.

Emelianenko wants to work for an arm triangle but Whitley is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Emelianenko connects with a nice short shot to Whitley's temple.

Whitley is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Emelianenko's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Emelianenko's back!
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Whitley shoots in for a takedown but Emelianenko shows good takedown defense.

Emelianenko has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Whitley tries for a takedown but Emelianenko sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Whitley is on top in guard.

Emelianenko is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Emelianenko. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.

Emelianenko escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Whitley gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Whitley not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Emelianenko tries to land a front kick but Whitley steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Whitley shoots for a double leg takedown but Emelianenko sprawls well. He's pushed Whitley's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Emelianenko walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Whitley checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Emelianenko has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Whitley uses from the top position.

Emelianenko motions for Whitley to come forward. Emelianenko throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Whitley is working to get back to half guard.
BOOM! Emelianenko connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Whitley tries to reverse the position but Emelianenko maintains control.

Emelianenko goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Whitley turns into him and now he's in Emelianenko's guard.
Whitley is stalling in the full guard.

Fedor Emelianenko comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Emelianenko has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
