PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Kirk Boon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Anthony Pettis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Boon kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is American Ninja 2 OST - Truckin'. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 24 - 30 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Kirk Boon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Anthony Pettis!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, George Francis and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Boon shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

Boon is trying to work for a kimura but Pettis is defending well.

Boon is working for a submission of some sort.

Boon is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Pettis sees it coming and defends easily.

Boon is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
We've been hearing good reports from Boon's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Pettis trying to control but Boon postures up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Boon is working for a kimura here but Pettis manages to reverse the position and he's now in Boon's guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Boon is on top in guard.


Boon drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Pettis manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Boon has Pettis in his guard.


Boon has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Pettis is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Boon.
A lull in the action here as Pettis stalls from top position.
Boon might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Boon tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Pettis wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Pettis controlling from side mount.
Pettis looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.

Pettis tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
Boon tries to improve position but can't.
Pettis tries to advance to mount but Boon denies him.
Boon looks to move to half guard but instead Pettis has passed into mount! Damn!

Pettis wants to control the pace but Boon is squirming around nicely.
Boon can't escape the position.
Pettis can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Boon is looking to escape.
Boon is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Pettis is a very stocky fighter. Infact he's such a weird shape that he's almost like some sort of comedy character - it's hard to believe he's real.
Pettis's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Boon is desperately trying to improve his position but Pettis has a good base and remains in mount.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Pettis trying to control but Boon is having none of it.
Pettis prevents Boon from getting the reversal.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Anthony Pettis will probably get the nod.

No joy there for Pettis, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Pettis misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Pettis lands a slapping body shot.
Kirk Boon seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Pettis scores with a jab to the head.

Oooooh!!! Pettis has knocked Boon down with a huge combo! Pettis steps away and waves a wobbly Boon back to his feet! This one might not go much longer!


Boon is rocked!


It looks like Kirk Boon has been cut.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Boon shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Pettis is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.
Oh Boon is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kirk Boon. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Pettis steps into range and unloads a brutal right left combo! Boon is out on his feet! Pettis sets himself and nearly takes Boon's head off with a straight right, sending him crashing to the mat! Wow, that was nasty... but awesome! Wooo!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:31 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). Anthony Pettis!
