PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Anderson Ken (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ryuji Saka (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Anderson Ken!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Ryuji Saka!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ken looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Saka is fending him off so far but Ken persists. Nope, Saka circles away and we're back to standing.
As Ken backs off Saka throws a huge counter combo but Ken manages to avoid it all.

Saka closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Ken did well to prevent Saka getting side control.
Saka winds up and cracks Ken with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Saka not doing much here.
Ken has a hand on Saka's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Saka takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!
Saka trying to control but Ken is having none of it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Saka scoring with strikes but Ken is staying in there.

Ken manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Ken is looking to control Saka's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Ken avoid being mounted?
Saka sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Ken defending well though.
Saka is keen to just control but Ken is a slippery customer.
Saka slows the pace down in half guard.
Ken is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Saka scores with a couple of nice shots.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Still in half guard, Saka seems content to control.
Ken is trying to maintain the position but Saka is very close to passing his half guard.
Saka not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Ken avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Saka.
Ken wants to get back to his feet.
Saka throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Ken is staying active underneath Saka, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Saka is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Saka has his takedown stuffed

and Ken moves into the clinch.

Ken has hold of one of Saka's legs. Saka is fighting the takedown attempt but Ken gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

Saka is looking for a triangle but Ken pushes his legs off easily.
Ken is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Saka is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Ken is aware though and is defending well.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Saka is on top in guard.

Ken looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Saka puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Ken manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Saka keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.
Saka has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Saka is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Ken to keep the fight standing.

Ken is looking for a takedown.
Ken is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Saka gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Anderson Ken. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Saka has Ken pressed against the cage.
Come on Ken - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.

Ken breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Saka tries to clinch up.
Ken looked to counter that last move with a leg kick but didn't pull the trigger.
Saka gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Ken counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Ken can't get the takedown.
Saka should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Ken fails to pull the fight into his guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ryuji Saka dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Saka tries to close the distance and clinch up but Ken swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Saka fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Ken is looking to counter with head kicks.
Saka on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Ken throws a push kick but Saka slaps the foot to one side.
Ken tries to clinch up but Saka circles away and keeps his distance.
Anderson Ken is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Saka tries to clinch up.
Saka pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Ken half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.

Saka bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Saka is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Ken knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Ken is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Saka's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Ken lands with a few short shots to the body.
Saka is thwarting Ken's attempts to control the position.
Saka blocks the strikes from Ken.
Saka working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Saka connects with a nice short shot to Ken's temple.
Saka is nestled in close to Ken, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Ken actively working from the bottom here.
Ken is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Saka is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Ken defends it well.

Ken manages to get to full guard.
Ken pulls Saka in close to prevent any damage.

Saka postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Ken has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Saka is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
Saka pushes Ken back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
Saka lands a left hand.
Ken controlling the action here for a moment.

Saka manages to pull guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Ken stopping the sweep attempt from Saka.
Ken slips nicely into half guard.
Ken uses his free foot to push down on Saka's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Saka.
Saka keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Ken swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Saka is now in Ken's guard. A big mistake from Ken there, giving up the dominant position!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Ken keeping moving, preventing Saka from controlling successfully.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Ryuji Saka will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Saka dives in and grabs Ken's left leg, looking for a takedown. Ken pushes down on Saka's head and hops out.
Ken fails with the takedown.
Saka darts in trying to clinch
letting Ken counter with a right hand.
Ken shoots in and drives through. Saka sprawls well.
Saka tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.

Saka gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Ken circles away from the clinch attempt.
Ken feinted with a counter takedown.

Saka tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Ken swivels and escapes.
Ken tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Saka counters with a stiff right hand.
Ken shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Saka counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Anderson Ken. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Saka working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Ken's head.

Ken is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Saka looking to pass the guard.
Ken bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Saka's guard.

Ken slips nicely into half guard, despite the strikes coming from Saka.
Saka wants to get back to full guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Saka strikes from the bottom but Ken uses the opportunity to move to side control.
Saka wants to get back to his feet.

Saka taking punishment in the form of punches.
Ken working away.
Saka tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Ken wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Ken trying to control the action but Saka is working from the bottom.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Ken happy to just control the position for now.
Saka is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Ken slips a nice elbow through Saka's hands, connecting with Saka's forehead.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Ken not landing any meaningful shots this time.

Saka looking for submissions off his back.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Ryuji Saka.
Well Saka has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
