Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Numbers Fulton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Mathews (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). James Mathews has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Numbers Fulton!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, James Mathews!
The judges for this bout are Ben Hemmingworth, Damien Edna and Eliza Hachem.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Mathews closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Fulton quickly recovers to half guard.
Fulton tries to roll over but Mathews keeps him under control.
Fulton has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Mathews is working away from the top position though.
Fulton is controlling Mathews's position as best he can from this difficult position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Fulton is staying active underneath Mathews, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Fulton holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Mathews content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Mathews thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Mathews moves into the clinch.

Fulton escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Mathews lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Fulton jabs Mathews right on the nose. Mathews blinks but takes it well.
A left and a right from Mathews both land. Nice combination.

Fulton rushes Mathews and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Fulton throws an elbow but it's blocked.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Mathews decides to pull guard.
Mathews working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Fulton.
Fulton really is a fat lump.
Fulton is stalling in the full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Fulton won't allow Mathews to sweep him here.
Fulton is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Fulton prevents Mathews from getting back to his feet.

Mathews is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Fulton is defending well for now.

With the fighters up against the cage, Fulton throws an elbow but misses.

Mathews manages to break the clinch.
Fulton tries to check a leg kick but that clearly hurt him.

Mathews shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Fulton napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Fulton explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there!

This has been an exciting period of action!

Fulton moves into the clinch successfully.
Fulton using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Mathews has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Mathews is trying to force a seperation but Fulton has the dominant position.
The referee calls for Mathews to work.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Numbers Fulton will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



The fight moves into the clinch position.
Fulton can't get the takedown.
Mathews looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.

Mathews ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Mathews no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Fulton is looking to work some ground and pound but Mathews has wrist control.
Fulton content to stall in guard here.

Fulton seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Mathews for as long as he can get away with.

Mathews wants to stand and escape but instead Fulton has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Fulton is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Mathews is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Fulton is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Fulton is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Mathews shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Fulton eats them both and turns towards Mathews to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Mathews throws a head kick that misses.
Mathews lands a two punch combo.
James Mathews seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Fulton fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Mathews looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

James Mathews showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!



Fulton gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Mathews tries to break the clinch but Fulton is controlling the position.

Fulton's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Fulton moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.

Fulton has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Mathews is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
Mathews takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
A frustrated look appears on Mathews's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Fulton breaks from the clinch.
Mathews throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena.
Mathews scores with a spinning back kick!
Mathews misses with a two punch combination.
Mathews misses with a jab, cross combination.

Fulton clinches with his opponent.

Fulton pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Mathews closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Mathews lands in his opponent's guard.

Fulton has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Mathews off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Fulton breaks the clinch.
Mathews throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Mathews shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Fulton napping and manages to drive through into side control!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Fulton is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Mathews is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Mathews gets tackled into the cage by Fulton. Fulton maintains the clinch.

Mathews jumps guard and drags Fulton to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Mathews is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Fulton content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Mathews can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Fulton controls the pace.
Fulton won't allow Mathews to sweep him here.
Fulton stays in close to Mathews's body and controls the position.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Numbers Fulton.
I think Fulton has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
