PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Alk Manik (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rafal Zamana (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Zamana has chosen Modestep - Show Me A Sign as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Alk Manik!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Rafal Zamana!
The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Ivan Kurochkin and Konstantin Menshow.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice takedown defense from Zamana. No joy for Manik on that attempt.

Manik moves into the clinch.

Zamana has clasped his hands together around Manik's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.

Zamana looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Manik tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Manik is working hard here to advance position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Zamana is staying tight to Manik's torso, preventing him from escaping.
You can see the frustration on Manik's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Zamana is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Manik knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Zamana slows the pace down in half guard.
Manik keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Zamana looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Manik looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Manik lands one or two decent shots to the body here. Although from his own half guard, he's not going to be causing too much damage.

Zamana is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Manik defends it well.

Manik wants to control but Zamana is keeping busy.
Manik slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Zamana is pushing down on Manik's leg trying to pass to half guard. Manik is fighting to maintain full guard but Zamana has managed to sneak the leg through.

Zamana throws a sloppy head kick and Manik moves out of range easily.
Manik has been working on his balance at Barbell Brigade, so perhaps that has help him stuff some of the takedown attempts by Zamana.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Zamana.
Zamana cracks Manik with a big right hand but Manik just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Manik tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Zamana thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Manik is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.

Zamana tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Zamana has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Zamana is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Manik's half guard.

Zamana is trying to control the action in half guard but Manik is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Zamana blocks the strikes from Manik.
Manik has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Manik is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Zamana's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Zamana's back!
Zamana tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
Manik is stalling here but it's allowed Zamana to get half guard.

Zamana is trying to get back to full guard.
Zamana moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Manik postures up in Zamana's guard and throws a big left but Zamana blocks it.

Manik would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Rafal Zamana showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Manik throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Zamana's waist but Zamana gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Manik off to one side.
Alk Manik is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Zamana darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Zamana scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Manik is trying to get back to full guard.

Zamana in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Manik tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Zamana!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:50 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Rafal Zamana!
