PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Gabriel Weeks (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ryan Mason (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Gabriel Weeks has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Gabriel Weeks seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Gabriel Weeks!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ryan Mason!
The judges for this bout are Seu Braga, Luis Engracia and Paulo Santos.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Weeks has closed the distance and engaged Mason in a clinch.
Weeks is stalling here.

Mason breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Mason fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Weeks sprawls well initially but Mason persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Weeks taking some punishment here, with Mason in his half guard.
Weeks wants to get back to his feet.
Weeks trying to control from the bottom.
Weeks makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Weeks.
Weeks trying to control the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Weeks wants to stand and escape but Mason is having none of it.
Mason landing with the ground and pound.

Weeks controls Mason momentarily but Mason frees himself.
Weeks really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Mason trying to control the position from guard on top but Weeks is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Weeks being controlled here, momentarily.
Weeks wants to sweep but no luck.
Weeks preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Weeks utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Weeks wants to stand up but Mason is controlling him.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Mason tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Weeks defends well and Mason ends up having to push Weeks into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Weeks swung with a counter punch to the body but it didn't connect.
Mason tries a head kick but it misses.

Weeks drives through with a takedown into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Weeks wants to stand and escape but instead Mason has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Weeks tries to strike from the bottom.
Weeks wants to get back to his feet but Mason passes into half guard.
Weeks manages to get to full guard.

Mason postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Weeks is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Mason, into his guard.

Weeks will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Weeks decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Mason shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Weeks is trying to defend but Mason finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Weeks is looking to improve his position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mason seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Weeks does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Mason stalling away here and it's allowed Weeks to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Weeks wants to sweep here but Mason controlling him for the moment.
Weeks trying to strike off his back.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Weeks is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Weeks looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Mason passes into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Ryan Mason will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Mason will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Weeks gets a double leg takedown into Mason's guard.
Mason is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Weeks trying to control but Mason is working from the bottom.

Weeks decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Mason, up you get!

Weeks tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Weeks postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Weeks wanted to stand there but Mason had control of the position.
Weeks slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Mason is trying to control the position but Weeks postures up.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Mason shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

Weeks kicks off Mason and gets to his feet.

Weeks tries to keep at a distance but Mason has taken the fight into the clinch.

Mason successfully pulls guard.
Mason doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.

Mason is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Weeks is aware though and is defending well.
Weeks wants to get up but he can't break Mason's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Weeks stands and steps away. Mason gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Weeks with a lazy takedown attempt

and Mason counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Mason.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Gabriel Weeks. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Weeks is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Mason pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Mason breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Horrible takedown attempt by Weeks or perhaps it was just good defense by Mason, which made it look bad.
Mason changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Weeks tries to avoid it but Mason manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Weeks to the ground. Weeks escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Weeks misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Mason blocks a head kick by Weeks.
Mason wants to counter the offense by Weeks and move into the clinch position.

Weeks has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Mason.
Weeks defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Mason.
A counter left hand to the body from Weeks misses its target.

Mason decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Weeks missing with punches from the bottom.

Mason is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Mason performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Weeks is looking to control Mason's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Weeks avoid being mounted?
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Ryan Mason will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Weeks looks to score with a jab to the body but Mason is just out of range.
Mason wants to counter the offense by Weeks and move into the clinch position.

Weeks manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Mason on his heels. He'll look to pass Mason's guard now, I'm sure.
Mason will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Weeks is looking to stand up but Mason won't let him.
Mason looking to control.
Weeks is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mason wants to sweep here but Weeks controlling him for the moment.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Mason pushes Weeks off and gets back to his feet.
Mason rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Weeks moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Mason goes for a double leg but Weeks avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Weeks continues to drive forward.
Weeks tries to counter by clinching up but Mason breaks away and moves out of range.

Mason closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Weeks's guard.

Weeks pushes Mason off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Mason closes the distance and clinches.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Mason tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.

Weeks jumps into guard, dragging Mason to the mat.

Weeks trying to strike off his back.

Mason gets to his feet - Weeks follows without any prompting.
Mason takes a swing at Weeks's ribcage but misses.

Mason closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Weeks is trying to push Mason away but Mason has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Mason has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Weeks after a bit of a struggle.
Weeks controlling the action here for a moment.
The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.

Mason breaks from the clinch.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Weeks closes this distance looking for a takedown but Mason circles away.
Weeks has a takedown stuffed.
Sloppy strikes from Mason. Those never looked like landing.
A quick step to the side and Weeks tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.

Weeks closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Mason is looking to get back to his feet here but Weeks is keeping cool and he's managed to take Mason's back.
Weeks is not going to allow Mason to sit and survive in this position.

Mason looking very determined here, making life difficult for Weeks.
Weeks is controlling his opponent, waiting for an opportunity to finish.
Mason trying to get back to his feet but Weeks is in full control for now.
Weeks has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Mason's body.
Gabriel Weeks has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Ryan Mason is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
You can see the frustration on Mason's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.

I would just about give that final round to Ryan Mason.
I've got Mason winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
