Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Buddy Sutton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mateo Gates (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Buddy Sutton!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Mateo Gates!
The judges for this bout are , Don Winkell and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sutton moves out of range of the body kick.
Gates throws a nice looking combination but Sutton bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Gates misses with a body shot

and Sutton counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Sutton manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Gates wanted to stand there but Sutton had control of the position.
Gates really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Sutton. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Sutton has an active guard here but Gates has managed to pass into half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gates is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.

Sutton really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Mateo Gates seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

and Sutton counters with a single leg into guard. Gates didn't expect that.

Gates wriggles free and stands up.

Sutton drops his hands momentarily and Gates takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Gates loads up on a big right hand but Sutton slips the punch.
Sutton fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Gates avoids it really well and circles away.
Gates follows through with a counter body kick but it doesn't land.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Sutton is defended easily by Gates.

Sutton shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Gates sprawls well. Gates wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Sutton gets slowly back to his feet.

Sutton seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
Horrible takedown attempt by Sutton or perhaps it was just good defense by Gates, which made it look bad.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Gates fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Sutton manages to avoid it.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

and Sutton counters with a good low kick that Gates was not able to check.

Gates lands a nice shot that snaps Sutton's head back.
Gates is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Sutton rather than just go for the knockout.

Sutton appears to be looking for a big counter.
Gates throws a right hand that Sutton ducks under and follows up with a left that Sutton also avoids with ease.
Sutton wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.
Gates throws a hook to the side of Sutton's head but Sutton sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
As Gates looks to move away, Sutton throws a big counter combo but Gates just gets out of the way.
Gates throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Sutton.

Sutton tries to counter with a takedown but Gates is quick to defend against it.
Gates has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Gates stuffs the takedown attempt from Sutton. Sutton gets slowly back to his feet.

Sutton closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Sutton lands in his opponent's guard.
Sutton loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

and Sutton counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Sutton shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Gates as he jumps to the side.
Gates wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.

Gates punishes Sutton's body with a nice straight punch.
Mateo Gates is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Gates enables Sutton to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Gates manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Sutton is standing up over Gates. Gates looks to escape but Sutton dives into side control.

Gates wants to get back to his feet.
Sutton is putting a hurting on Gates here, landing some big shots from side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Gates wants to get back to his feet but Sutton is dominant here and he's now got Gates's back!
Gates is trying to get back to his feet but Sutton has full control of the position and if anything, Gates has just worked his way into a worse spot.
Sutton lands a punch that was close to the back of the head but the ref thinks it's OK.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Sutton is looking to control Gates but Gates is wriggling around and keeping busy.
Gates trying to get back to his feet but Sutton is in full control for now.
Gates is covering up but some of the strikes from Sutton are getting through and doing damage.
Sutton is throwing punches to the body, looking to soften Gates up.

Gates is trying to get back to his feet. He's worked up on to his knees and now he's on his feet with his head on the canvas, trying to shake Sutton off. It looks like it's working - Sutton slides off, much to his dismay, and we're back to standing! Gates displaying calm under pressure there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Mateo Gates will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Gates rushes Sutton and starts throwing punches like they are going out of style! Sutton is up against the cage and has nowhere to go. Gates piles on the pressure and Sutton crumples to the floor! This one is all over!
