PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Palmer Patel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cristian Marsh (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Palmer Patel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Cristian Marsh!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Robert Twigg and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Marsh scores with a leg kick.
Nice takedown defense from Marsh. No joy for Patel on that attempt.

Patel tries to sprawl but Marsh drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Patel scrambles, trying to get to his feet, but Marsh manages to mount him!
Patel tries to improve his position but instead Marsh has taken his back!
Marsh has the hooks in. Patel is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.

Marsh working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet.
Marsh struggling to land strikes to the head as Patel covers up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Marsh is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.
Oooh a big shot gets through from Marsh. Many more shots like that and the referee will have to think about stepping in!

Marsh decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.
Patel fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Patel darts in looking for a takedown but Marsh gets double underhooks and turns Patel into the cage.

Patel gets tackled into the cage by Marsh. Marsh maintains the clinch.

Marsh pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Marsh is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Patel's half guard.

Marsh is working for a guillotine from mount but Patel frees his head quite easily.
Marsh lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.

Poor strikes thrown by Marsh there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
Patel could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Marsh trying to control but Patel is having none of it.
Marsh has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Marsh has hold of Patel's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Patel manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Cristian Marsh dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

and Marsh counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Marsh.

Marsh's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Patel tries to close the distance and clinch up but Marsh swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Marsh lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.

Marsh gets control of Patel's arms and successfully pulls guard. Marsh will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Marsh holds on and takes a little breather.
Patel throws a strike but Marsh rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Patel utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Patel is working an open guard so Marsh takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Patel shoots in looking for a takedown but Marsh manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Patel's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Patel gets tackled into the cage by Marsh. Marsh maintains the clinch.

Marsh manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Patel got a little sloppy there for a moment and Marsh has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Patel has managed to get both his arms back between Marsh's legs - danger averted.
Marsh is breathing heavily.
Patel is fighting to break Marsh's control of his arms but Marsh is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Marsh has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Patel is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
Patel is looking to break free of the clinch but Marsh has double underhooks.

Marsh is trying to trip Patel. He has hold of a leg but Patel is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Marsh persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Marsh has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Patel is trying to maintain the position but Marsh is very close to passing his half guard.
Patel is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Marsh's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Marsh's back!

Marsh drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Marsh jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Cristian Marsh showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Patel explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there!

Marsh fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Patel to the ground. Marsh is now in Patel's guard.

Patel working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Marsh doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Marsh manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Patel wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Marsh manages to pass to side control.

Patel is looking for a triangle but Marsh pushes his legs off easily.
Marsh stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Patel swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Marsh perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Patel wants to control from the top but Marsh keeps moving.
Marsh wants to hit a switch here but Patel passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Marsh there!

Patel swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Marsh is now in Patel's guard. A big mistake from Patel there, giving up the dominant position!

Marsh is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Patel will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

Marsh takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Cristian Marsh comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Marsh has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

In his post fight interview, Cristian Marsh started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
