PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between John Haigh (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Myers Hockles (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Haigh's entrance music is Prayer of the Refugee by Rise Against . A fine choice. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 26 - 24 - 1, fighting out of New York, John Haigh!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 19 - 1, fighting out of New York, Myers Hockles!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Haigh tries to bum rush Hockles with a series of wild strikes but Hockles uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Hockles looks like he wants to counter punch here.
Hockles uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Haigh.
Haigh throws a right hand that Hockles ducks under and follows up with a left that Hockles also avoids with ease.

Hockles changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Haigh looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
You can see the frustration on Haigh's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Haigh's coaches at Vicious Striking have been working on his defensive grappling in preparation for this fight so let's see if he can get out of this tricky position.

In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Hockles working his ground and pound in the gym. So far it seems to be working well.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Haigh tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Hockles throws a fast counter high kick but Haigh manages to duck under it in time.

Hockles shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Hockles showed some decent athleticism there.

Hockles seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Haigh does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Haigh has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Hockles can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Myers Hockles showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Hockles dives in for a single leg takedown but Haigh sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Hockles feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Hockles has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Myers Hockles decided to thank the fans in attendance for making a great atmosphere. It seemed to go down pretty well.
John Haigh was interviewed post fight and said 'Maybe it is time for me to make the move to another weight class.'.
