The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Wade throws a hook to the side of Newman's head but Newman sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Newman defending well as Wade loads up on a big left hand.

Wade takes a swing at Newman's ribcage but misses.
Newman shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Wade eats them both and turns towards Newman to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.

and Newman makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Newman lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Wade circles away quickly and effectively.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Newman closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Wade did well to prevent Newman getting side control.

Newman seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Wade for as long as he can get away with.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Newman connects with a nice short shot to Wade's temple.
Wade wants to control but Newman is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Wade is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Newman's half guard.
Newman is controlling Wade's trapped leg to prevent Wade from advancing to side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
