PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Miguel Machin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jose Aldo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Machin comes to the cage accompanied by Pandora's Music Box. Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Miguel Machin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jose Aldo!
The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Alan Glass and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Aldo looks to score with a jab to the body but Machin is just out of range.

Machin shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Machin sitting in guard here, content to control.
Machin wanted to stand there but Aldo had control of the position.
Machin pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Aldo is keeping the position for now.
Machin is in a tricky position. We've heard reports from his gym mates at that he's been drilling escapes, so let's see if he can get back to his feet.
Aldo is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Aldo throws his legs up looking for a submission but Machin uses it to pass to side control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Machin remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Machin wants to stand but Aldo has his arm trapped.

Machin decides to stand up, so the ref orders Aldo to his feet.

Aldo feints and as Machin raises his hands in defense, Aldo changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Machin keeping moving, preventing Aldo from controlling successfully.
Aldo must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Machin is looking for a triangle but Aldo pushes his legs off easily.

Machin is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Machin gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Still in half guard, Aldo seems content to control.
Let's hope that Aldo has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Aldo shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Machin manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Machin can't keep his opponent in guard - Aldo advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Aldo not landing any meaningful shots this time.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jose Aldo dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



A momentary lapse in concentration from Aldo enables Machin to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Aldo manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Machin is looking to pass into half guard but Aldo pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Aldo is in guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Machin is on top in guard.

We've been informed that Aldo has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Machin wants to stand but Aldo has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Machin avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Machin would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Machin wants to pass the guard but Aldo is keeping the position.

Machin gets to his feet - Aldo follows without any prompting.

Aldo moves into the clinch.

Aldo ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Aldo no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Machin gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Machin is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Aldo's half guard.
Machin wants to control but Aldo is keeping him busy.
Machin passes into side control, despite Aldo's attempt to control the position.

Aldo is looking for a sweep.

Machin decides to stand back up. Machin steps back and let's Aldo get back to his feet.

Machin is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Aldo can't fight it off and eventually Machin manages to take the fight to the floor. Aldo looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Machin slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Aldo has his foot on Machin's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Machin works his way back into a safe position though.

Machin is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Aldo's half guard.
Aldo tries to kick Machin off but Machin keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Aldo wants to improve his position but Machin is controlling well.
Aldo has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Machin is working away from the top position though.
Aldo is breathing heavily.
Machin works his way into side control.
Miguel Machin overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Machin decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Machin bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
The referee asks Machin politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Machin prefers to stall for the moment though.

Machin thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Aldo is pushing Machin's head away, looking to escape. Machin manages to hold on to the position though.
Aldo manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Aldo seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Aldo is desperately trying to improve his position but Machin has a good base and remains in mount.

Aldo has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Machin is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Aldo lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Aldo stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Machin swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Machin looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Aldo puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Aldo wants to control from the top but Machin keeps moving.
