PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Royce Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Josh Reynolds (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Royce Gracie had real problems making weight for this fight. After initially coming in at 172.1lbs, he had two hours to make the official fight weight. He made it but it will have taken a lot out of him to cut those extra few pounds. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Royce Gracie!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Josh Reynolds!
The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Felipe Paraventi and Emerson Jorge.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Reynolds drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Gracie looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this!

Reynolds stands up and we're back to a striking position.

Reynolds closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Reynolds takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Reynolds really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gracie. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Reynolds frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Reynolds stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.

Reynolds lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Gracie circles away quickly and effectively.
Josh Reynolds seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Reynolds throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.
Reynolds with a jab.
Reynolds connects with a good right hand that stumbles Gracie. Gracie circles away out of range and recomposes himself.

Gracie gets caught napping as Reynolds dives in and scores a takedown. Gracie manages to retain guard.

Reynolds is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Reynolds wants to pass the guard but Gracie is keeping the position.
Reynolds controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
It looks like Reynolds might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Reynolds is continuing to stall.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Reynolds goes for a high kick. It partially lands.

Reynolds manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Gracie on his heels. He'll look to pass Gracie's guard now, I'm sure.
We've been hearing good reports from Gracie's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Reynolds pushes down on Gracie's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Reynolds is controlling the pace.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Let's hope that Reynolds has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Reynolds's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Reynolds looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Reynolds seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
We're seeing a lot of stalling here from Reynolds.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Josh Reynolds showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


That kick from Reynolds tenderised Gracie's leg. Gracie is trying to keep his angry face on.
Reynolds has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Reynolds closes the distance and clinches.
Reynolds lands a knee to the body.

Reynolds passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Reynolds remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Reynolds tries for a kimura but Gracie is defending well.
Reynolds happy to just control the position for now.

Reynolds wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Gracie, who protects the arm well.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Reynolds decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Reynolds throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Gracie tries to counter with a takedown but Reynolds is quick to defend against it.
Reynolds throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Reynolds shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Gracie napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Reynolds has knee on belly and moves into mount.
Royce Gracie has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Josh Reynolds is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Well Reynolds has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
