PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Bruce Zimbardo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Riki Maru (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Maru has chosen Chris Brown - Ayo as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Riki Maru was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Bruce Zimbardo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Riki Maru!
The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Leandro Rodrigues and Matheus Silva.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maru has his takedown stuffed
and Zimbardo counters with a left to the body.
Maru wants to clinch
and Zimbardo counters with a nice uppercut.
Maru misses with a takedown attempt - Zimbardo sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Zimbardo half committed to a counter leg kick.
Zimbardo scores with a push kick.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Maru with a poor takedown
and Zimbardo counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
Bruce Zimbardo has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Riki Maru.
Maru wants to clinch up but Zimbardo keeps it at a distance.

Zimbardo lands with a hook. Maru tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Maru wants to clinch but Zimbardo slips to the side
and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.

Maru gets a takedown into half guard.
Zimbardo on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Zimbardo tries to get out of the position.
Maru tries to pass to full mount but Zimbardo defends it.
Zimbardo tries to roll over but Maru keeps him under control.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Maru connects with a nice short shot to Zimbardo's temple.
Zimbardo is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Maru's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Maru's back!

Maru is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Zimbardo.
Zimbardo knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Maru on the ground.
Maru tries to escape the position.
Zimbardo biding his time, controlling Maru.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Maru wants to escape the position.
Zimbardo trying to secure his dominant position for a moment - making sure Maru doesn't escape.
Zimbardo controlling well, preventing Maru from escaping the position.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Zimbardo is trying to stick to Maru's back but Maru is turning into Zimbardo. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Zimbardo's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Maru.

Maru postures up in Zimbardo's guard and throws a big left but Zimbardo blocks it.

Zimbardo utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Zimbardo keeping moving, preventing Maru from controlling successfully.
Zimbardo avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Zimbardo working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Maru.
Maru trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Maru postures up in Zimbardo's guard and throws a big left but Zimbardo blocks it.

Zimbardo wants to sweep but no luck.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Maru misses with a takedown
and Zimbardo counters with a good low kick that Maru was not able to check.

and Zimbardo counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Maru shoots and misses
letting Zimbardo counter with a right hand.
Maru darts in looking for a takedown but Zimbardo gets double underhooks and turns Maru into the ropes.
Zimbardo throws a front kick that sends Maru stumbling back into the ropes.
Maru wants to clinch
and Zimbardo counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Maru gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Maru has his takedown stuffed
and Zimbardo finishes the little exchange by landing a big kick to the body.
Zimbardo cracks the inside of Maru's front leg.
Maru throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Zimbardo cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

A big left from Maru misses.
Maru has his takedown stuffed
enabling Zimbardo to counter with a crisp jab.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Maru tries to close the distance and clinch up against the ropes but Zimbardo paws at him with a jab and circles away.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Maru.
Zimbardo thinks about countering with a head kick.

and Zimbardo counters with a slapping leg kick.
Maru has his takedown stuffed
and Zimbardo counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Maru is lucky that one didn't land flush.

Maru fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Zimbardo avoids it really well and circles away.
Maru fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Maru throws a left and a right that both miss
and Zimbardo counters with a stiff right hand.
Maru fails with the takedown
and Zimbardo counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Zimbardo fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Maru throws a leg kick that is checked
and Zimbardo counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Maru closes the distance looking to clinch
and Maru takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

That's eight minutes gone in the round.
Maru misses with an uppercut
and Zimbardo counters with a nice uppercut.
No luck for Maru with that takedown attempt.
And Zimbardo counters with a quick kick to the body but Maru blocks it.
Maru darts in trying to clinch
and Zimbardo connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Maru with a poor takedown
and Zimbardo counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Zimbardo throws a quick inside leg kick.
Zimbardo fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.

Zimbardo tries a head kick but it misses.
Maru takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Maru tries to work over Zimbardo's front leg with a kick but Zimbardo checks it.

Zimbardo tries to keep at a distance but Maru has taken the fight into the clinch.

Zimbardo breaks from the clinch.
Zimbardo throws a mid kick that lands with a slap.
Zimbardo throws a head kick that Maru semi-blocks.
Maru throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Zimbardo's waist but Zimbardo gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Maru off to one side.
Maru takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Maru doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Zimbardo counters with a low kick, right behind Maru 's knee.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Bruce Zimbardo dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Maru scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Zimbardo doesn't seem bothered though.
Zimbardo digs a good body shot into Maru's ribs.
Zimbardo connects with an inside leg kick.
Maru is looking to chop away at Zimbardo's legs.
Maru misses with a takedown attempt
and Zimbardo counters with a big head kick but Maru shrugs it off.

enabling Zimbardo to counter with a crisp jab.

and Zimbardo makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Riki Maru is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Maru takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.

Zimbardo lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.
Zimbardo throws a head kick that misses.
Riki Maru seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Zimbardo connects with a good right hand that stumbles Maru. Maru circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Zimbardo goes for a high kick. It partially lands.


Maru is rocked!
Zimbardo cracks Maru with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the ropes.
Maru is still on wobbly legs! Can Zimbardo finish him?
Maru takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.
Bruce Zimbardo is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Zimbardo catches Maru with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
Bruce Zimbardo is winning the standup battle so far.

Zimbardo lands a big head kick that sends Maru tumbling to the mat! Zimbardo takes a step backwards and waves Maru back to his feet - he wants the finish!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Maru shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Zimbardo counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Maru throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Zimbardo counters with a left right combination that sends Maru crashing to the mat - Zimbardo wastes no time in diving on top of him and pounding Maru out for a TKO! Devastating finish!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:16 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Bruce Zimbardo!
Riki Maru spoke after the fight, saying 'I Will Come Back.'.
