PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Jolly Leg Byrd (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jose Cronos (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cronos has chosen Sandstorm as his entrance music. The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Chris Saunders and Ryoma Takatsuka.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Cronos bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Byrd sneaks back into half guard.

Cronos is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Byrd doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Cronos.
Cronos wants to lay and pray for a moment but Byrd keeps working.
Cronos is stalling here. Byrd is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Cronos seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Byrd has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Byrd wants to lay and pray for a moment but Cronos keeps working.

Cronos manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Byrd wants to free his trapped foot but Cronos is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Byrd passes Cronos's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Cronos wants to control but Byrd is keeping busy and won't allow it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Cronos bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Byrd working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Cronos doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Cronos manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Byrd drops back looking for a leg! Cronos is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Cronos manages to kick Byrd off! Byrd jumps back into Cronos's guard.

That was a close round but I would say that Jolly Leg Byrd will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Byrd misses with an uppercut.
Cronos unleashes a big counter combination but Byrd bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.
Cronos takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Byrd fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Cronos on the side of the head.
Byrd looks to land a right hand but Cronos moved out of range.
Cronos is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.

Jolly Leg Byrd seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Byrd throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Cronos sees it coming and avoids it easily.

The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Cronos checks a leg kick.

Cronos smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Cronos dives in and grabs Byrd's left leg, looking for a takedown. Byrd pushes down on Cronos's head and hops out.

Cronos let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.
Byrd throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Jolly Leg Byrd is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Cronos scores with a leg kick.
Cronos closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Cronos moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.

Byrd rushes Cronos and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Cronos manages to break the clinch.
Cronos walks into a stiff left hand from Byrd.
Cronos throws a lazy right hand but Byrd sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Byrd feints and then cracks Cronos's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Cronos down.
Byrd throws an overhand right that lands on Cronos's shoulder, as Cronos tries to avoid the shot.
Cronos has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Cronos throws out a counter right but Byrd avoids it with no problem.

Cronos doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.

Byrd throws a looping overhand right but Cronos ducks down to avoid it.

Byrd fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Cronos.

Byrd tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Cronos paws at him with a jab and circles away.
A looping hook to the body misses from Cronos. Byrd does a little dance to reset his feet.

Cronos fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Cronos misses with a takedown attempt - Byrd sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

enabling Cronos to counter with a crisp jab.
Cronos takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Byrd uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Cronos.
Cronos chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Byrd can pounce on him.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Byrd throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena.

Cronos feints the counter takedown.
Cronos is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Cronos throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Byrd.
Cronos drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Byrd pivots, looking for a leg kick but Cronos is out of range and Byrd settles back down.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Cronos drops his hands momentarily and Byrd takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Byrd lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Cronos has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Cronos and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.

Cronos sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Byrd enables Cronos to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Byrd manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Byrd has his foot on Cronos's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Cronos works his way back into a safe position though.
Byrd is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Cronos can do to turn this around?
Byrd is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Cronos wants to control from the top but Byrd keeps moving.
Cronos stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Byrd swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Jolly Leg Byrd is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Cronos is fighting to break Byrd's control of his arms but Byrd is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Cronos has gone for a leg lock! Byrd slips out almost immediately though and dives into Cronos's guard.

Byrd seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Cronos escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Byrd gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Cronos is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Well, if Byrd is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Byrd wants to advance to full mount but Cronos doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead.

Well Byrd has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
