And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Bloke Smeg!
The judges for this bout are Fedor Mirinova, Igor Prikhodko and Konstantin Menshow.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smeg tries to clinch up but Phillips circles away and keeps his distance.
Smeg misses with a hook

and Phillips counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Phillips throws a punch but it's blocked by Smeg.
Smeg has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Smeg is clearly stalling here... Pick up the pace son.

Phillips's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Smeg pulls out of a head kick attempt.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Phillips swats away the attempt to clinch by Smeg.
Smeg tries to land a leg kick but Phillips saw it coming and moves away.
It looked like Phillips was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Smeg lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.

and Phillips counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Phillips slips a jab and a cross from Smeg.
Smeg tries to clinch up but Phillips circles away and keeps his distance.
As Smeg looks to move away, Phillips throws a big counter combo but Smeg just gets out of the way.
Bloke Smeg seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Phillips takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.
The crowd are getting pretty annoyed with Phillips for his constant stalling in the clinch and are voicing their displeasure.

Smeg throws a right hand that Phillips ducks under and follows up with a left that Phillips also avoids with ease.

and Smeg makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

Smeg lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Phillips backs up against the cage.
Smeg fails with an attempt to clinch.
As Smeg looks to move away, Phillips throws a big counter combo but Smeg just gets out of the way.
Smeg tries to close the distance and clinch up but Phillips swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Smeg tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Phillips manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Smeg is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Smeg throws a series of punches but Phillips moves out of range.
Smeg lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.

Alex Phillips has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Bloke Smeg.
Smeg rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Phillips moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Phillips shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Smeg manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Phillips slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Phillips really is a fat lump.
Phillips stands up over Smeg, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Phillips is looking to work some ground and pound but Smeg has wrist control.

Phillips decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

That was a close round but I would say that Alex Phillips will probably get the nod.

Smeg manages to escape and get back to his feet.

and Phillips holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Smeg fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Phillips has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.

As Smeg tries to get set, Phillips tries to push him back and clinch up but Smeg manages to avoid the attempt.
Phillips shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Smeg as he jumps to the side.

Smeg tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Phillips was well out of range. Poor timing from Smeg.

Smeg shoots in for a takedown but Phillips shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Smeg looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Smeg jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Smeg tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Phillips manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Smeg throws the left hand but Phillips avoids the punch easily.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Smeg throws a big elbow that misses.

Phillips has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Phillips perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Smeg is looking to control Phillips's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Smeg avoid being mounted?
Nice strikes from Phillips there.
Phillips is taking a breather. Smeg says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Phillips not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Alex Phillips.
