PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Chris Barker (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jean Valjean (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Chris Barker!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jean Valjean!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Elvis Blanc and William Peck.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Barker goes for a double leg but Valjean avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Valjean continues to drive forward.
Barker could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Valjean looking for a takedown here - he's got it.

Barker looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Valjean is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Valjean working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Valjean drops back, looking for a kneebar! Barker looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Barker looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Barker!

Valjean is looking to regain half guard here but Barker keeps moving and retains side control.

The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Valjean wants to control but Barker postures up.
Valjean manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Barker misses with a head shot. Valjean uses the momentum to regain guard.
Valjean is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Valjean working for a triangle but Barker defends it easily.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Valjean is looking to stand up but Barker isn't so interested in that idea.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Valjean throws a sloppy head kick

and Barker counters by moving into the clinch.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Valjean has hold of one of Barker's legs. Barker is fighting the takedown attempt but Valjean gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

Barker is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Barker looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Valjean drives through and clinches with Barker against the cage.

Valjean has Barker pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Valjean pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Barker tumbling to the mat - Valjean dives into Barker's guard.

Valjean has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Valjean is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Barker is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Barker has escaped and now he's on top!

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Valjean wants to sweep here but Barker controlling him for the moment.

Valjean has Barker pulled in close to control his posture.
Barker might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Valjean wriggles free and stands up.

Valjean rushes Barker and presses him up against the cage.

Valjean wants the takedown. Barker is fighting it off but Valjean persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Barker's guard against the cage.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Barker manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Valjean manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
Valjean doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jean Valjean showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

Barker knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Valjean on the ground.

Barker escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Valjean gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Valjean has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Valjean keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Barker's head.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Barker is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Valjean drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Barker dives on top into guard.

Valjean has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Barker throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Valjean's waist but Valjean gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Barker off to one side.
Barker avoids the head kick by Valjean.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Valjean looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Chris Barker has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Jean Valjean is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Barker is not content to let Valjean control the position.

Jean Valjean comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Valjean has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
