PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Josh Turner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and David Schmidt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Turner kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Next Episode by Dr. Dre. David Schmidt acknowledges the crowd's support as he enters the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Josh Turner!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, David Schmidt!
The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Dean Styles and Lou da Vinci.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Turner shoots in and drives through. Schmidt sprawls well.
Schmidt throws a head kick but Turner moves out of range.
Turner appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Schmidt throws a head kick that misses.
Schmidt throws a series of punches but Turner avoids them all with ease.
Schmidt throws a poor cross that misses

and Turner counters with a shoot takedown. Schmidt fights it but they end up in guard.
Turner prevents Schmidt from getting back to his feet.
Turner stays in close to Schmidt's body and controls the position.
Schmidt wants to get back to his feet but Turner is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Turner is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Turner prevents Schmidt from getting back to his feet.
Turner trying to control the position from guard on top but Schmidt is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Schmidt really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Turner. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Turner not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Turner passes into half guard.

Turner wants to work for an arm triangle but Schmidt is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Turner perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Turner seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Schmidt does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Turner is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Turner is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Schmidt sees it coming and defends easily.

Turner is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Schmidt defends it well.
Schmidt is trying to stand up here but Turner is controlling him well.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Turner is pressing down on Schmidt's thigh, looking to free his foot. Schmidt is holding on for now.
Schmidt looks like he's trying to stand up.
Turner looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Schmidt manages to escape and get back to his feet!
We've been told by Turner's head coaches at Iron Joe's Boxing Gym ($800/wk) that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Turner tries to move into range but Schmidt moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
Turner takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
Turner shoots in looking for a takedown but Schmidt manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Turner's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Turner shoots in looking for a takedown. Schmidt tries to sprawl out of it but Turner keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Schmidt manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Josh Turner. That's going to take a lot out of him.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Turner is defended easily by Schmidt.

and Turner counters with a takedown into side control.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Turner tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Turner has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Turner tries for a kimura but Schmidt is defending well.
Turner wants to lay and pray for a moment but Schmidt keeps working.

Turner is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Schmidt is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Turner tries to move to mount but Schmidt blocks the move with his legs.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but David Schmidt will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Turner shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Schmidt defends it nicely.
Schmidt lands a lovely overhand right.
Schmidt fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Turner is trying hard to land a takedown here. Schmidt sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Schmidt lands a front kick.
Schmidt connects with a single shot there.
A head kick misses from Schmidt.
Schmidt displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Turner.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Schmidt has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Turner off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Schmidt has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Schmidt lands the left hand.
Turner tries to move into range but Schmidt moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
Turner fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Schmidt connects with a looping right hand.

Turner shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Turner was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Schmidt prevents Turner from moving into mount.
Turner advances to full mount.

Turner looking for a guillotine from mount but Schmidt is having none of it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Schmidt is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.

Schmidt defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Turner.
Turner wants to take his opponent's back but Schmidt doesn't allow it.

Turner is controlling this nicely and is looking to make no mistakes. Schmidt is trying to wiggle out of this horrible position. Schmidt flips to his side and attempts to get a leg in for half guard. Turner anticipates the leg and manages to get behind Schmidt and secures both hooks! This could be bad! Turner slips an arm under Schmidt chin and tries to position for a rear naked choke. Turner has worked the choke in now and it looks tight. Turner is squeezing on Schmidt like an anaconda would it's prey. Schmidt fails to tap and has fallen unconscious! We've got ourselves a winner by way of a rear naked choke!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:19 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Josh Turner!
After winning the bout, Josh Turner thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
