PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Sean Juan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Federico Manta (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Manta has chosen Ultima Corsa by Mondo Marcio as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 16 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Sean Juan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 20 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Federico Manta!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Jeff Smith and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Juan darts in looking for a takedown but Manta gets double underhooks and turns Juan into the cage.

Juan drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Manta gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Juan is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Manta is trying desperately to improve position.
Juan moves to his opponent's back but Manta bucks him off and ends up in guard. A bit of a disaster there for Juan.
Juan has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.

Manta seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Juan does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Juan seems to be going for a rear naked choke. He has an arm under Manta's chin but Manta turns very nicely into Juan's guard. Good BJJ skills being displayed there by Manta.

Manta slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Manta with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Manta's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Juan is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Juan is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Manta doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Juan.

That was a close round but I would say that Sean Juan will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Manta misses with an uppercut.
Manta ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Juan moves away.
Juan dives in and grabs Manta's left leg, looking for a takedown. Manta pushes down on Juan's head and hops out.
Juan bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
A slapping leg kick lands for Juan.
Juan changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Manta tries to avoid it but Juan manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Manta to the ground. Manta escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Sean Juan. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Manta swings and misses with a hook to the body.
A solid leg kick lands there for Manta.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Juan shoots in but no luck this time.
Manta appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body.

Juan drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Manta dives on top into guard.

Juan looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Manta has picked Juan up and slammed him! Juan can't keep hold of the triangle and Manta manages to pass to side control!

Manta jabs. That one connects to the head of his opponent.
Manta swings for the body but Juan moves out of range.
Manta throws a quick inside leg kick.
Juan has his takedown stuffed
and Juan takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Manta stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Manta wants it to stay on the feet.
A little jabbing left from Manta on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Juan blocks a head kick by Manta.
Manta throws a looping overhand right but Juan ducks down to avoid it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Juan steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Manta.

Juan closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Juan wants to free his trapped foot but Manta is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Juan stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Manta swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Juan slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Juan goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Manta rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Juan's guard! Nice work there by Manta!

Federico Manta comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Manta has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
