PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Hector Vazquez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Miles North (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). North has chosen Men at Work - Down Under as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. This should be a great matchup!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Hector Vazquez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Miles North!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Frank Antenori and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
North misses with a wild combination.
Vazquez shoots and misses
and North counters with a head kick. That will keep Vazquez thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!
A combination from North does no damage.
North bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Vazquez's head.
North throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
North takes a swing at Vazquez's ribcage but misses.
Vazquez closes this distance looking for a takedown but North circles away.
Vazquez fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Hector Vazquez. That's going to take a lot out of him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A nice leg kick lands there from North.
North misses with a head kick.

North changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Vazquez looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

North stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Vazquez is trying hard to land a takedown here. North sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Miles North seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
North throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
North misses the shot to the body.
Vazquez fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Vazquez shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and North connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

North gets a double leg takedown into Vazquez's guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Vazquez looking to control.
Vazquez is breathing heavily.
North is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Vazquez is trying to keep North in close.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
North lands a couple of digs.
North looking to control the position here, rather than advance.

North decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Vazquez, up you get!
North has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Vazquez is landing a low percentage of strikes.

North drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
North seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
North is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Vazquez is working an open guard so North takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
North lands a head kick. Vazquez smiles back at him and beckons him forward.
North with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
North keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
As Vazquez backs off North throws a huge counter combo but Vazquez manages to avoid it all.
Vazquez tries to move into range but North moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
North lands a nice looking kick to the body. Vazquez takes a step back to recover.
North connects with a leg kick. Vazquez looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
North connects with an inside leg kick.
North scores with a body shot.

North drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
North sitting in guard here, content to control.
North postures up and lands a big shot to Vazquez's brow.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
North is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
It looks like North might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Miles North dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



North throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Vazquez tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. North is in Vazquez's guard.
North lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
North controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

North gets to his feet - Vazquez follows without any prompting.
North takes a swing at Vazquez's ribcage but misses.

North fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
North scores with the left hand. Vazquez knows he should have avoided that one.
Vazquez fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but North avoids it really well and circles away.
Hector Vazquez is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Nice sprawl there from North as Vazquez shoots in.
North has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
North connects with an inside leg kick.
Vazquez throws a combination but it was largely blocked by North.
North lands with a slapping head kick.
Vazquez avoids the head kick by North.
North fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Vazquez.
Vazquez misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Hector Vazquez. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

North drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

North seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Vazquez looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but North puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
North slips a nice elbow through Vazquez's hands, connecting with Vazquez's forehead.
North keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.

North is looking for a kimura but Vazquez is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for North to get the leverage.
Still in half guard, North seems content to control.

North postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Vazquez to stand up.
Vazquez throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
North looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
North scores with a leg kick.

North looking for a takedown here - he's got it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Vazquez trying to control the position.
North slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Let's hope that North has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
North is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Vazquez is striking but North is not phased and passes to half guard.
Vazquez strikes from the bottom but North passes into mount!
North tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Miles North showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Vazquez takes a head kick and keeps coming.


It looks like Hector Vazquez has been cut.
North keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Vazquez misses with a double jab
and North counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Vazquez is lucky that one didn't land flush.
Miles North seems to be getting the better of the standup.
North lands a nice hook to Vazquez's body. Vazquez takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
North keeps Vazquez at a distance using the push kick.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by North.
North scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
North is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Vazquez rather than just go for the knockout.
Vazquez scores with a one two! North had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
North chopping away at his opponent's legs.

North fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Vazquez has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.

North closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Vazquez to the mat! Vazquez manages to get full guard.

North gets to his feet. Vazquez looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Vazquez looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Vazquez takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.

North gets a double leg takedown into Vazquez's guard.
Vazquez might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
North makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
North is stalling in the full guard.

North stands up from Vazquez's guard - North perhaps looking for a knockout.
North is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.

North bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Vazquez's head.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
North takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
North scores with a hook.
Vazquez on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
North throws a head kick that Vazquez semi-blocks.
North lands a high kick!

North shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. North showed some decent athleticism there.
North landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Miles North is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with North in particular looking to stall.
Vazquez is in trouble now - North has advanced to mount!
North controlling his opponent.
We're seeing a lot of stalling here from North.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Vazquez swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.
Vazquez is trying to escape the mount.
North content just to control the position here.
Yet more stalling tactics from North.

And that's the end of the fight!
Miles North comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well North has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
