PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Nick Meier (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Miko Maia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Meier comes into the arena with KRIEGER by Thomas D. blaring out of the sound system. Miko Maia told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Nick Meier!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 41 - 28 - 1, fighting out of New York, Miko Maia!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Lombardi, David Schapiro and Alyssa Summers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maia shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Meier as he jumps to the side.

Maia closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Meier quickly recovers to half guard.
Meier trying to hold on to Maia's head to control him but Maia postures up.

Maia is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Maia controlling the action here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Meier tries to get to full guard but Maia has control of the leg.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Maia lands with a punch from half guard.
Maia landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Still in half guard, Maia seems content to control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Let's hope that Maia has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Maia decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
Meier has been working on his boxing with his coaches at Abobomination Training in the buildup to the fight.
Maia throws a left and a right that both miss
and Meier counters with a nice uppercut.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Maia closes this distance looking for a takedown but Meier circles away.

Maia looking to score a takedown here. Meier is defending well but Maia drives through and ends up in Meier's guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Meier being controlled here, momentarily.
It looks like Maia might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Meier is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Maia is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Maia drops back, looking for a kneebar! Meier looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Meier looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Meier!


Meier thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Maia gets back to half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Meier is trying to control the action in half guard but Maia is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Maia is doing well to control the position and prevent Meier from advancing to side control.

Meier looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
The fighters are battling for position here. Maia manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Maia is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Miko Maia dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Maia gets a takedown into half guard.
Maia throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Maia stops Meier from getting back to his feet.
Meier knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Maia on the ground.
Maia is taking a breather. Meier says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Meier wants to get back to full guard but Maia has mounted him!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Maia's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Maia scoring with strikes but Meier is staying in there.
Maia tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Meier in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
Maia controlling the position easily from mount.
Maia cracks Meier with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Maia pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.

Maia controlling from the full mount.
Meier is looking to improve his position but Maia isn't that keen on the idea.
Maia scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Maia controlling the position easily from mount.

Meier is in all sorts of trouble here.

Maia looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.

Maia fails to take his opponent's back.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Miko Maia showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Maia explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.

Maia working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

We're seeing a lot of stalling here from Maia.
Maia has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Maia is looking for a kimura but Meier is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Maia to get the leverage.
Nick Meier has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Maia prevents Meier from standing back up.
Maia controlling the action here.
Meier wants to get back to his feet.
Maia is figuring out what he wants to do next.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Maia looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Meier!
Maia lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Meier down.

Check out the look on Maia's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Maia is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Meier is trying to escape and Maia transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Meier is forced to tap! Nice work there by Maia! Very nice indeed!
