PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Caleb Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Owen Whipple (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Owen Whipple told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Caleb Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 6 - 0, fighting out of New York, Owen Whipple!
The judges for this bout are Steven Brown, William Gold and Paul Tew.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith throws a head kick that half lands.
Smith throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Whipple flicks out a counter leg kick but Smith steps away.
A big right from Smith misses.
Whipple lands a nice looking body kick.
A slow jab from Smith misses its intended target.
Whipple throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Smith on the side of the head.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Smith throws a head kick that misses.
Whipple feints a counter leg kick.
Whipple shoots in but Smith avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Smith throws a head kick that misses.
Whipple tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Both fighters circling a little - Whipple finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.
We've been told by Smith's head coaches at LOD - Slaughterhouse that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Smith throws a sloppy head kick and Whipple moves out of range easily.
Whipple lands a jab to Smith's midsection.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Smith swings away with a leg kick that misses.

Whipple closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Smith to the mat! Smith manages to get full guard.

Smith has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Whipple is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.

Whipple wants to take the fight to the mat but Smith manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Smith tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Smith gets underhooks to prevent Whipple's takedown attempt.
Caleb Smith has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Owen Whipple.

Whipple works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Whipple pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Smith is keeping the position for now.
Smith knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Whipple on the ground.
Whipple is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Smith wants to get back to his feet but Whipple is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Whipple wants to pass the guard but Smith is keeping the position.
Whipple showing good wrestling skills to control the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Whipple accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Whipple slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Smith avoids a kick to the body.
Smith tries a head kick but it misses.
Smith moves out of the way of the counter high kick fromWhipple.
Smith scores with a jab to the head.
Whipple shoots for a double leg takedown but Smith sprawls well. He's pushed Whipple's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Smith scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Smith lands a head kick!


Whipple is rocked!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Smith throws a sloppy head kick and Whipple moves out of range easily.
Whipple is still on wobbly legs! Can Smith finish him?
Whipple throws a shot to the body.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Smith.
Whipple connects with a crisp jab.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Smith lands a glancing blow to the side of Whipple's head.
Smith lands a big head kick that sends Whipple to the canvas! Smith follows up with strikes from the mount that forces the ref to step in and stop the fight!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:11 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Caleb Smith!
Caleb Smith spent the whole post fight interview bigging himself up. It didn't go down that well with the fans after a while as they thought it was a bit arrogant.
The defeated Owen Whipple had this to say: 'I guess I'm just not that good. '.
