PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between James Gattis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Stephen Dean (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, James Gattis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Stephen Dean!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Frank Dennis and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Dean misses with an attempted mid kick.
Dean takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Gattis moves into range and lands a nice body kick.
Gattis misses with a double jab.
Dean circles away from the clinch attempt.
Gattis displaying good standup as he scores with a three punch combination.
Gattis throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Gattis has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gattis will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Gattis throws a head kick but Dean moves out of range.

Dean avoids the head kick by Gattis.
Gattis darts in looking for a takedown but Dean gets double underhooks and turns Gattis into the cage.
Gattis backing away here, and Dean unleashes a leg kick that just misses.
James Gattis seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gattis misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Dean steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Gattis.
No joy there for Gattis, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Gattis has taken the fight to the clinch.
Dean tries to break the clinch but Gattis is controlling the position.

Dean escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Gattis misses with a wild combination.
Dean raises up his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.
Dean ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Gattis moves away.

Dean jabs Gattis to the body, keeping him at a distance.

Dean drives through with a takedown into Gattis's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Dean working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.
Dean trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Dean accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Dean wants to get up but he can't break Gattis's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Gattis has momentary wrist control but Dean slips an elbow through the middle.
Dean is looking to stand up but Gattis won't let him.
Dean distracts Gattis with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Dean throws an elbow that misses. Gattis uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Dean's guard. Nice move by Gattis!

Dean has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Gattis has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.
Gattis has a couple of punches blocked by Dean.
Gattis tries to land knees in the clinch but Dean avoids the damage to the body.
Dean tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Gattis just stands there and leans against the cage.
Dean is trying to break free.
Gattis digs a right hand underneath Dean's ribcage. Dean let out a lung full of air as it connected.
Gattis tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.

Gattis has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Dean clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!

Gattis is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Dean knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Dean for a finish.

Gattis throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Dean tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Gattis is in Dean's guard.

Gattis tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Dean manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Dean wants to counter with a clinch but Gattis pushes him away.

Dean is trying to push Gattis away but Gattis has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Gattis breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Dean is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Gattis with a body shot.
Gattis fails in his attempt to clinch.
Dean throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Gattis tries to close the distance and clinch up but Dean swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Dean now looks to counter with a shot at the body.

Gattis lands with a kick to the temple. Dean shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"

Gattis throws a series of punches but Dean avoids them all with ease.
Dean shoots in for a double leg but Gattis sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Dean dives in for a single leg takedown but Gattis sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!


Dean keeps the fight on the outside.
James Gattis is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Gattis has closed the distance and engaged Dean in a clinch.

Gattis escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Dean avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Gattis moves into the clinch.

Gattis escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Gattis decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Dean looks like he's trying to stand up.
Dean throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
Dean is trying to control but can't.
Gattis passes to side control.
Dean is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Gattis has just dragged him back down to the mat.

Gattis is looking to take a break and control but Dean is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Gattis prevents Dean from escaping the position.

Gattis tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Dean is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Gattis not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Dean has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Gattis is working away from the top position though.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Gattis seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
A combination from Gattis does no damage.
Dean only half commits to the counter leg kick.

Dean dives in and scores a takedown into Gattis's guard.
Dean is working Gattis over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

James Gattis overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Gattis wants to stand but Dean is controlling the position.
Dean stands up over Gattis, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Gattis uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Gattis tries to close the distance and clinch but Dean swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Dean swats away the attempt to clinch by Gattis.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

James Gattis showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Gattis has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
