PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mario Robertson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jon Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Mario Robertson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jon Jones !
The judges for this bout are , Don Winkell and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jones stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Jones wants it to stay on the feet.
Robertson throws a body shot but no joy.
Jon Jones seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Jones shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Robertson napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Robertson tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Jones presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!
Jones controlling the pace for now.
Robertson is trying desperately to improve position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Robertson wants to control but Jones is having none of it.

Jones is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Robertson is surviving well by controlling Jones 's body position as best he can.
Robertson is trying to escape the mount.

Robertson bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Robertson stands up over Jones , holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Jones wants to improve his position but instead Robertson has moved into half guard.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Robertson is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Jones is just riding it out for now. Robertson eventually gives up the hold.
Jones regains full guard. Nicely done.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Jones throws his legs up looking for a submission but Robertson uses it to pass to side control.
Jones tries to bench press Robertson off him but Robertson keeps the position.

Jones wants to get back to his feet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Jones can't do much from the bottom here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Jon Jones will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Robertson gets tackled into the cage by Jones . Jones maintains the clinch.

Jones breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Robertson feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Jones is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Robertson presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.

Jones breaks the clinch.
Robertson shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Robertson shoots in but Jones avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Jones has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Jones shoots in and bounces Robertson off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Robertson will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Jones trying to control but Robertson is working from the bottom.
Robertson really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Robertson wants to get back to his feet but Jones passes into half guard.

Jones is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Robertson sees it coming and defends easily.
Jones is keen to just control but Robertson is a slippery customer.

Jones looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Robertson with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Jones is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Robertson doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Jones .
Robertson is staying active underneath Jones , who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Robertson works his way to full guard. Good work.
Jones throwing strikes from guard but Robertson blocks nicely.

Jones makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Jones trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Jones pushes down on Robertson's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Jones seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Jones decides to stand and escape the position.
Jones slaps away a takedown attempt from Robertson, before circling back to the center of the mat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mario Robertson. That's going to take a lot out of him.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Jones throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Robertson was covering up waiting for the punch and Jones finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Jones controls from within his opponent's guard.
Jones loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jon Jones showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!



Jones clinches up with Robertson and pushes him back against the cage.

Jones escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Robertson takes the fight into the clinch.
Robertson is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Robertson gets underhooks to prevent Jones 's takedown attempt.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Jones manages to break the clinch.
Robertson tries to score a power double leg takedown but Jones sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Robertson somewhat.

Robertson tries to sprawl but Jones drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Robertson gets back to full guard.
Jones not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Robertson is striking off his back. Jones thinks nothing of it though and passes easily into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Jones is stalling here. Robertson is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Jones seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Robertson has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Jones wings away with a couple of strikes but they don't land.
Jon Jones has got the better of the ground game so far.
Jones is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Jones is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Robertson asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Jones can't do much from the bottom here.
Jones is looking for a sweep.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Robertson tries to score with some ground and pound. Jones controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
What's Jones going to do here then? He's in a bit of a pickle.
Robertson in side control lands a decent elbow.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Jones tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Jones can't do much from the bottom here.
Jones tries to bench press Robertson off him but Robertson keeps the position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Jones manages to get back to half guard.
Mario Robertson has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Jon Jones is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Robertson throwing shots but Jones is blocking nicely.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Mario Robertson.
Well Jones has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
