PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Lal Gurung (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lee Pang (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Lee Pang will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Lal Gurung!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Lee Pang!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Lombardi, Alyssa Summers and Reed Andrews.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gurung has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Gurung there as he acknowledges the shot.

Gurung takes the fight into the clinch.
Gurung creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
Pang wants to break free but Gurung has control.
Gurung definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.

Gurung jumps into guard, dragging Pang to the mat.
Pang prevents Gurung from getting back to his feet.
Gurung lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gurung slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Gurung gets to his feet. Pang looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Pang tries to clinch up but Gurung circles away and keeps his distance.
Gurung went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.

and Pang counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.

Pang is trying to break the clinch but Gurung has him pressed against the cage.
Pang wants to break the clinch but can't.
Gurung lands a shoulder strike.
Pang tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
Gurung keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Pang's efforts to push away.

Gurung will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Pang lands a nice looking kick to the body. Gurung takes a step back to recover.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Pang is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Gurung shoots in for a double leg but Pang sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Pang throws a leg kick which misses Gurung's front leg but catches the back leg as Gurung tries to avoid it.

Pang buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.

Pang pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Gurung tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Pang paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Gurung moves in looking to clinch but Pang pushes him off.

Lee Pang is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Pang gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Gurung.

Pang stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gurung swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Pang won't allow Gurung to sweep him here.
Pang wants to stand but Gurung is controlling his posture from full guard.

Gurung is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
Pang wants to get back to striking at distance but Gurung won't allow it.

Gurung lands a good knee to the midsection. Pang won't want to take too many of those.
Gurung lands on the inside with an uppercut.
Gurung keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Pang's efforts to push away.

Pang looks winded!

Gurung manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Gurung is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Pang stands up from Gurung's guard - Pang perhaps looking for a knockout.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Gurung.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Gurung.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Lal Gurung dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Gurung dives in for a single leg takedown but Pang sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Gurung swats away the attempt to clinch by Pang.
Gurung steps to his left, right into the path of a big body kick from Pang. That one must have hurt.
Gurung is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Pang can do to turn this around?
Pang avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Pang dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Gurung. That did some damage!
Gurung doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Pang counters with a nice low kick that buckles Gurung's knee momentarily.
Pang connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Pang scores with a nice head shot.
Pang's coach down at Midnight MMA was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Pang's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.

Gurung dives in and grabs Pang's left leg, looking for a takedown. Pang pushes down on Gurung's head and hops out.

and Pang counters with a series of strikes. Gurung will be more careful next time no doubt.
Lal Gurung is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Pang fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Gurung tries to land knees in the clinch but Pang avoids the damage to the body.

Pang blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Pang is trying to break the clinch but Gurung has him pressed against the cage.
Gurung tries to pull guard but Pang won't allow it.

Good anti-grappling being displayed by Gurung as Pang tries to tie him up.
Gurung's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Gurung is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Pang gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Pang manages to escape and get back to his feet!

Pang wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Gurung is working for takedown but Pang is calmly controlling the position for now.

Pang managing to block the knees to the body from Gurung.

Pang is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.

Gurung escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Pang displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Gurung.

Pang has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

and Pang counters with a left and a right that stings Gurung.

and Pang counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Pang bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick.
Pang tries to bum rush Gurung with a series of wild strikes but Gurung uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Pang throws a sloppy head kick and Gurung moves out of range easily.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Lee Pang showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Lee Pang seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Pang circles away from the clinch attempt.
Gurung shoots in but Pang avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Pang jabs Gurung right on the nose. Gurung blinks but takes it well.
Gurung misses with a takedown
and Pang makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Gurung is defended easily by Pang.

Gurung shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Pang's guard.

Pang can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Gurung controls the pace.

Gurung drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Gurung jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Gurung throwing shots but Pang is blocking nicely.

Gurung stands up and beckons Pang to join him on the feet.
Pang tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Gurung tries to counter by clinching up but Pang breaks away and moves out of range.
Gurung shoots for a double leg takedown but Pang sprawls well. He's pushed Gurung's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Gurung fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Pang darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Pang.
Pang lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.

Gurung manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Gurung keeping moving, preventing Pang from controlling successfully.

Pang trying to stand up but can't free himself from Gurung's guard.
Pang trying to control but Gurung is working from the bottom.
Gurung is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Gurung gets to his feet - back to striking we go!

Pang defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Gurung.
Pang lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Pang with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
A head kick from Pang lands but Gurung takes it in his stride.
Gurung tries to close the distance and clinch up but Pang swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Pang tries to clinch there but Gurung circles away.
Gurung looks for a takedown but Pang sprawls well.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Gurung dives in for a single leg takedown but Pang sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

and Pang counters with a slapping leg kick.
Gurung is hobbling a little on that front leg after taking quite a few leg kicks so far in this fight.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Pang connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Gurung momentarily.

And that's the end of the fight!
Lee Pang comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Pang has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
