PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jake Obrien (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joel Castro (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Obrien has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. Joel Castro has the power to score a knockout today if he connects clean with Jake Obrien's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jake Obrien!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Joel Castro!
The judges for this bout are Chris Dean, Skip Squint and Darius Henderson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Obrien misses with a series of wild punches.

Castro drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Castro has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Obrien throws a head kick that misses.
Castro lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
Obrien is breathing heavily.
Castro looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Castro decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Obrien manages to escape and get back to his feet!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Castro is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Obrien's half guard.
Obrien is trying to maintain the position but Castro is very close to passing his half guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Castro is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Obrien defends it well.
Obrien wants to control but Castro is keeping busy.

Obrien can't do much from the bottom here.

Castro creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Obrien sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Obrien pushes Castro away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Castro gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Castro thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Castro tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
Obrien wants to control but Castro postures up.
You can see the frustration on Obrien's face as Castro controls the position.

Obrien is trying to control Castro's posture but Castro avoids it.

Castro tries for a kimura but Obrien is defending well.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Castro feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Obrien is trying to control the position but Castro postures up.
Castro is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Castro should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Let's hope that Castro has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Castro has hold of one of Obrien's legs. Obrien is fighting the takedown attempt but Castro gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Obrien is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Castro defends well.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Castro gets to his feet. Obrien looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Castro decides to stand up, so the ref orders Obrien to his feet.

Castro works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.

Obrien has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Castro has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Obrien postures up in Castro's guard and throws a big left but Castro blocks it.
Castro is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Castro pushes Obrien off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Obrien takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Joel Castro seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Castro stuffs the takedown.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Castro! But no joy.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Obrien enables Castro to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Obrien manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Obrien has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Castro has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.

Obrien throws a punch but it's blocked by Castro.
Obrien throws a knee to the head but misses.
Obrien really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Castro has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Obrien uses from the top position.
Obrien will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Joel Castro showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

Obrien is adopting a defensive guard.
Castro throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Obrien works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Castro wants to control from the top but Obrien keeps moving.
Castro wants to get up but he can't break Obrien's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Castro closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Obrien has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Castro is on him like a limpet, forcing Obrien back against the cage.

Castro has clasped his hands together around Obrien's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Castro is trying to get an arm triangle but Obrien is defending well.

Castro decides to take the fight back to the feet.
A slapping body kick lands there for Obrien.
Castro throws a sloppy head kick and Obrien moves out of range easily.
It looked like Obrien wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Obrien will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Castro is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Obrien with a body shot.

Castro wants to clinch
and Obrien counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Castro throws a sloppy head kick and Obrien moves out of range easily.

Obrien tries to keep at a distance but Castro has taken the fight into the clinch.
Castro blocks the elbow strike.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Jake Obrien has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Joel Castro is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jake Obrien. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Castro gets control of Obrien's arms and successfully pulls guard. Castro will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Well Castro has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
