Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of
5 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Dave Brown!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of
21 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Thompson!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Don Winkell and Timothy Bukovac.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Thompson blocks a head kick by Brown.
Brown jabs. That one connects to the head of his opponent.
Brown throws a low kick but Thompson moves out of range easily.
Thompson takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Thompson dodges the punch combination from Brown.
Thompson circles away from the clinch attempt.
Brown misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Thompson changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Thompson on the wrong end of a nice jab.
Brown throws a right and a left that both miss.
Thompson with the counter takedown but Brown avoids it easily.
Brown slaps away a takedown attempt from Thompson, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Brown tries to bum rush Thompson with a series of wild strikes but Thompson uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Brown tries to clinch up.
Brown misses with a low kick as Thompson jumps back.
Thompson throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Brown tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Thompson is in Brown's guard.
Brown has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Thompson has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.
That's one minute gone in the round.
Brown wants to get back to striking at distance but Thompson won't allow it.
Thompson has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Brown after a bit of a struggle.
Thompson is working for takedown but Brown is calmly controlling the position for now.
Dave Brown has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of John Thompson.
Thompson has picked Brown up - he's going for a ride! Thompson dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Brown is looking for a sweep. Thompson is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Thompson is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Brown is trying to get back to full guard.
Thompson wants to work for an arm triangle but Brown is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Thompson is trying to control the action in half guard but Brown is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Thompson has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
That's two minutes gone in the round.
Brown looks like he's trying to stand up.
Brown trying to hold on to Thompson's head to control him but Thompson postures up.
Thompson is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Brown doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Thompson.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Thompson working his ground and pound in the gym. So far it seems to be working well.
Brown is trying to maintain the position but Thompson is very close to passing his half guard.
Brown misses with some strikes from the bottom.
That's three minutes gone in the round.
Brown controlling the position well.
Thompson is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Brown keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Brown is trying to get back to full guard.
Brown gets back to full guard.
Thompson working some strikes from top position.
Brown working a defensive guard but Thompson passes into half guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round.
Thompson missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Thompson wants to take a breather but Brown is having none of it.
Thompson is working for a submission of some sort.
Thompson is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Brown!
Thompson landing punches.
Thompson is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Brown is desperately trying to improve his position but Thompson has a good base and remains in mount.
Brown tries to hold on but Thompson pushes him away.
Thompson moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Brown has worked his arm free - good work by Brown!
Thompson thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Dave Brown will probably get the nod.
That's time! Brown's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
A big right from Brown misses.
Brown lands a lovely overhand right.
Thompson walks into a jab.
Thompson ducks under a wild hook from Brown.
Thompson takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Dave Brown is winning the standup battle so far.
Brown gets caught flat footed, as Thompson shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Thompson stands up and waves to Brown to follow him.
Thompson shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Brown pinned against the cage. Brown gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Brown throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Thompson sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Brown will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Brown connects with a right hand. Thompson shakes it off.
That's one minute gone in the round.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Thompson is defended easily by Brown.
Brown tries to clinch but Thompson is having none of it.
Dave Brown is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Thompson moves out of range of the leg kick from Brown.
Brown scores to the head and body with a nice combination!
Thompson is rocked!
Thompson switches off momentarily and Brown cracks him with a monster right hand! Thompson topples backwards and makes a semi conscious attempt to cover up, as Brown dives in to land one more shot, before the referee has time to call the fight. What a finish by Brown!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:36 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Dave Brown!
