PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Ali Sarraf (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Andy Mcnab (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Sarraf's entrance music is The Trooper. A fine choice. Ali Sarraf has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ali Sarraf!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Andy Mcnab!
The judges for this bout are Illya Tyunina, Vladimir Khabensky and Ivan Kurochkin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mcnab throws a series of punches but Sarraf moves out of range.
Mcnab dives in and grabs Sarraf's left leg, looking for a takedown. Sarraf pushes down on Mcnab's head and hops out.
Sarraf pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Sarraf walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Mcnab checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.
Mcnab scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Mcnab has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Sarraf lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
Mcnab avoids the head kick by Sarraf.
Mcnab throws a sloppy head kick
and Sarraf counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.
Mcnab tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Mcnab shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Sarraf sprawls well. Sarraf wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Mcnab gets slowly back to his feet.
We've been told by Sarraf's head coaches at Russian Fighting Community Gym that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Mcnab feints a jab promting Sarraf to slip. Mcnab then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Sarraf slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.

Mcnab throws a sloppy head kick
and Sarraf counters with a slapping leg kick.
Good work by Mcnab as he checks the leg kick.
Mcnab lands a jab to Sarraf's midsection.
Mcnab swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Sarraf cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Mcnab tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Sarraf takes one to the chin there.
Mcnab throws a head kick that misses.
Sarraf throws a quick counter kick to the body but Mcnab avoids it.
Mcnab misses with a combination
and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.
Sarraf throws a leg kick that is checked

and Mcnab moves into the clinch.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Mcnab decides to pull guard.
Sarraf controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Mcnab wants to stand but Sarraf is controlling the position.
Sarraf has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Sarraf is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Sarraf continues to stall.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Mcnab is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Mcnab is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Mcnab is looking to clinch.
Mcnab tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Sarraf swivels and escapes.
As Mcnab backs away, Sarraf returns fire with a leg kick that just misses.
Ali Sarraf has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Andy Mcnab.
Mcnab shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Sarraf pinned against the cage. Sarraf gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Sarraf half committed to a counter leg kick.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Mcnab checks a leg kick.
Mcnab dives in for a single leg takedown but Sarraf sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Sarraf thinks about countering with a body kick.
A slapping body kick lands there for Sarraf.
Mcnab misses with a two punch combination.
Mcnab's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Mcnab duly obliges.

Mcnab forces Sarraf back against the cage and clinches.
Mcnab tries a knee to the head but Sarraf blocks it.

Mcnab manages to break the clinch.
A clash of legs there as Mcnab blocks the low kick.
Mcnab wants to counter the offense by Sarraf and move into the clinch position.
A head kick misses from Sarraf.
Sarraf stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Sarraf wants it to stay on the feet.
Mcnab closes the distance and clinches up with Sarraf, looking for a takedown. Mcnab pushes Sarraf against the cage but Sarraf circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Andy Mcnab will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action!


Mcnab shoots in but no luck this time.
Mcnab misses with a few strikes there.
Mcnab has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Sarraf.
Sarraf leaves Mcnab with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Sarraf swats away the attempt to clinch by Mcnab.
Mcnab misses with a series of wild punches.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sarraf throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
Mcnab tries to close the distance and clinch up but Sarraf swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Mcnab misses with a takedown
and Sarraf connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Ali Sarraf has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Andy Mcnab.

A chopping leg kick lands by Sarraf.
Mcnab misses with a takedown
and Sarraf counters with a left and a right that stings Mcnab.
Ali Sarraf is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Sarraf keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Mcnab throws a left and a right that both miss
and Sarraf makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Mcnab is breathing heavily.
Mcnab lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Sarraf at a distance.
Mcnab shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Sarraf defends it nicely.

Mcnab ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Sarraf throws an overhand right that lands on Mcnab's shoulder, as Mcnab tries to avoid the shot.
Mcnab lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
Mcnab misses with a head kick.
Sarraf throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.
Mcnab looks for a takedown but Sarraf sprawls well.
Mcnab throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Sarraf stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Good work by Mcnab as he checks the leg kick.
Mcnab lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
Mcnab tries to clinch up but Sarraf circles away and keeps his distance.
Sarraf swats away the attempt to clinch by Mcnab.
A little feinted left hand from Sarraf on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.

Sarraf feints and then cracks Mcnab's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Mcnab down.
Mcnab throws a left and a right that both miss
and Sarraf counters with a nice body shot.
A nice inside leg kick there by Sarraf. That's going to slow Mcnab down.
Mcnab moves out of range of the leg kick from Sarraf.
Andy Mcnab is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Mcnab fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Sarraf swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Mcnab fails with a takedown attempt.
Sarraf feinted there with a counter leg kick.
Mcnab is trying hard to land a takedown here. Sarraf sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
As Mcnab backs away, Sarraf returns fire with a leg kick that just misses.

Mcnab shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Sarraf sprawls well. Sarraf wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Mcnab gets slowly back to his feet.
Sarraf fires out a quick counter leg kick but Mcnab just manages to avoid it.
Sarraf is looking to chop away at Mcnab's legs.
Mcnab goes for a double leg but Sarraf avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Sarraf continues to drive forward.
Sarraf dodges the punch combination from Mcnab.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Sarraf throws a nice outside leg kick.
Mcnab throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Sarraf.
Ali Sarraf is winning the standup battle so far.
Nice takedown defense from Sarraf. No joy for Mcnab on that attempt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mcnab throws out a loose jab but Sarraf uses good head movement to avoid it.
Sarraf quickly followed up with a counter body kick but doesn't connect.
Sarraf lands with a kick to the ribs.
Mcnab takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Sarraf tries to sprawl but Mcnab drives through with a takedown into half guard.

Mcnab is looking for a kimura here.

Sarraf is looking to control Mcnab's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Sarraf avoid being mounted?
Mcnab passes into side control, despite Sarraf's attempt to control the position.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Sarraf tries to buck Mcnab off but Mcnab is having none of it.
Sarraf is trying to work for a sweep but Mcnab has mounted him!
Mcnab can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Sarraf is looking to escape.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mcnab unloads with some shots from mount but Sarraf bucks and avoids them well.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Mcnab tries to control but Sarraf wriggling away.
Sarraf wants to hold on but Mcnab pushes him away.
Sarraf can't escape the position.
Mcnab throws some wild stikes that Sarraf manages to avoid easily.

Mcnab looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Sarraf is squirming around, avoiding Mcnab's attempts to control the action.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sarraf is trying to reverse the position but instead Mcnab has taken his back - oops!
Sarraf biding his time here by controlling the hands, looking to escape.
Mcnab tries to get the hooks in deep but Sarraf pushed the leg off.

And that's the end of the fight!
Andy Mcnab comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Mcnab has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
