PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Nelson Key (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tommy Croce (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Nelson Key!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tommy Croce!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Daniel Franklin and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Key staying out of range there.
Key pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Croce back to the cage. Key follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.

Croce drives through with a takedown into guard.
Key could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Croce is fighting to break Key's control of his arms but Key is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Key wants to get back to his feet but Croce is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Croce trying to control but Key is working from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Key has control of Croce's left arm, preventing Croce from doing any damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Croce throws a big right hand that misses.
Key avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Croce's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Key wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Key is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Key keeping moving, preventing Croce from controlling successfully.
Key pulls Croce in close to his closed guard and prevents Croce from doing any damage or advancing position.

Key being controlled here, momentarily.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Croce gets to his feet. Key looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Key gets a clinch.

Croce's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Key pushes Croce up against the cage in a clinch.

Key escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Croce tries to keep at a distance but Key has taken the fight into the clinch.
Key is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Croce successfully pulls guard.
Croce is looking to stand back up but Key counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Croce.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Key connects with a nice short shot to Croce's temple.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Key in particular looking to stall.
Key prevents Croce from standing back up.

Key seems to be working for a kimura but Croce defends the submission attempt.
Croce throws a strike from the bottom that misses.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Key thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Croce's head.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Key is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Croce working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Key doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Key manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Nelson Key will probably get the nod.
That's time! Key's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Croce throws a front kick that sends Key stumbling back into the cage.

Key throws a series of punches but Croce moves out of range.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Key enables Croce to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Key manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Key wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Croce manages to pass to side control.
Tommy Croce has got the better of the ground game so far.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Croce lands a nice short elbow.

Key wants to control but Croce is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Croce wants to pass the guard but Key is defending well.
Croce wants to stand but Key has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

Croce is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Key keeps control of the position for the meantime.
Key is refusing to be controlled, as Croce sits in half guard.
Key has hold of Croce's hands but Croce slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

Croce stands up and beckons Key to join him on the feet.

Key moves into the clinch.

Croce is trying to break the clinch but Key has him pressed against the cage.

Croce lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Key is looking to control Croce's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Key avoid being mounted?
Croce seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Key does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Croce in particular looking to stall.
Key keeping hold of Croce's head, controlling as best he can.

Croce seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Croce is trying to control. Key wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Croce drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Key uses the cage to get back to his feet.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Key looks to land a right hand but Croce moved out of range.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Key manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Tommy Croce will probably get the nod - 10:9.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Key has not gone for a single takedown so far in this fight, which seems like a very strange tactic when you consider that he has the superior wrestling and BJJ.

Croce has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Key is on him like a limpet, forcing Croce back against the cage.

Key manages to break the clinch.

Croce throws a head kick that half lands.


It looks like Nelson Key has been cut.

Key has closed the distance and engaged Croce in a clinch.

Croce has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Key uses from the top position.
Croce wants to stand but Key is controlling the position.
Key is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Croce looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Key stands and steps away. Croce gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Key lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Key.

Croce takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Key wants to stand but Croce is controlling the position.
Key looking to hit a scissor sweep but Croce is one step ahead there.

Croce is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Key is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Key has escaped and now he's on top!

Croce is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Key is controlling him.

Key postures up and lands a big shot to Croce's brow.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Key wanted to stand there but Croce had control of the position.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Nelson Key.
I think Key has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
