PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between James Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matt Freeman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Penn comes into the arena with Everything in its right place blaring out of the sound system. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 7 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, James Penn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 28 - 20 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Matt Freeman!
The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Matheus Silva and Alexandre Firmino.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A big left from Penn misses.
Penn throws a head kick but Freeman moves out of range.
A looping hook to the body misses from Freeman. Penn does a little dance to reset his feet.
A slapping leg kick lands for Penn.
Freeman looks to score with a jab to the body but Penn is just out of range.

Penn bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Penn trying to control the action but Freeman is working from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Penn is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Freeman is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Freeman tries to buck Penn off but Penn is having none of it.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Freeman tries to wriggle free to get back to his feet but he's given up his back! Oops.
Penn has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Freeman's body.

Penn's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Penn controls the action.
Freeman trying to control the hands but Penn won't let him.

You can see the frustration on Freeman's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Freeman is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Freeman misses with an uppercut. Penn saw that one coming.
Penn fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Penn fails in his attempt to clinch.
Freeman keeps the fight on the outside.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Freeman! But no joy.
Penn digs a good body shot into Freeman's ribs.
Penn is looking to chop away at Freeman's legs.
Freeman looks to throw the jab but Penn is out of range.
Penn misses with a head kick.
Freeman staying out of range there.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Penn scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Freeman doesn't seem bothered though.

As Freeman tries to get set, Penn tries to push him back and clinch up but Freeman manages to avoid the attempt.
A head kick from Penn lands but Freeman takes it in his stride.

Freeman is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Penn.
Freeman blocks a jab.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Freeman! But no joy.
Freeman fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Penn manages to avoid it.
Penn connects with a high kick.
Penn is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Freeman can do to turn this around?
Penn tries to clinch but Freeman is having none of it.

Penn tries to clinch up but Freeman circles away and keeps his distance.
Freeman misses with a looping right.
Penn feinted with a counter takedown.
Penn missing with a left hand there. Freeman was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Freeman loads up on a big right hand but Penn slips the punch.

Penn fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Freeman to the ground. Penn is now in Freeman's guard.
Penn is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Penn advances to half guard.
Penn seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Freeman does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
We've been hearing good reports from Penn's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
Freeman wants to get back to his feet.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Penn throws a sloppy head kick and Freeman moves out of range easily.
Freeman throws a series of punches but Penn moves out of range.
Penn is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Freeman takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Penn shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Freeman as he jumps to the side.

Penn throws a solid leg kick but Freeman takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Penn.

Penn takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.

Freeman lunges at Penn with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Penn's hand.


It looks like James Penn has been cut.
Freeman thows a left - swing and a miss!
Freeman throws a hook but Penn blocks it.
Penn tries to counter with a takedown but Freeman is quick to defend against it.
The fighters circle momentarily. Freeman darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Penn scores with a head kick. Freeman tried to block it but didn't get his arm up in time.
Penn lands with a slapping head kick.
Freeman blocks a head kick by Penn.

Freeman feints and then winds up with a huge right hand that connects perfectly and sends Penn sprawling to the canvas! Penn rolls over backwards and springs off the ropes and manages to regain his footing - how acrobatic! Oh, he's still wobbly - can Freeman finish him?!


Penn is rocked!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Penn leaves his chin hanging out and Freeman seizes the opportunity with an uppercut! Penn crumbles to the floor in a heap! The referee steps in and tends to the downed fighter! What a knockout!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:54 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Matt Freeman!
Jumping up and down and very excited, Matt Freeman waved his t-shirt featuring Bad Man Clothing (Nothing Over $40)'s logo in front of the cameras.
