PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Marshall Artis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Irvin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Marshall Artis has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Marshall Artis seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Marshall Artis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Paul Irvin!
The judges for this bout are Ben Hemmingworth, Ron Honeybunn and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Artis misses with the combination.
Artis misses with a wild body shot.
A clash of legs there as Artis blocks the low kick.
Artis connects with a body shot that sends Irvin's belly button to the back.

Irvin closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Artis parries the strikes from Irvin easily there. Irvin is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Artis to escape.
Artis is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Irvin off and has taken his back!
Artis knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Irvin on the ground.
Irvin wants to escape the position.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Artis is landing with strikes. Irvin can't take much more of this.

You know, I was talking to some of our celebrities at ringside tonight and they were split right down the middle on who was going to win this fight.
Irvin is defending well here and trying to improve his position.
Artis is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.
Artis doesn't have the hooks in and Irvin manages to turn into his guard.

Artis manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Irvin manages to get himself to full guard.

Artis not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Irvin is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Artis is trying to control but Irvin passes into side control!

Artis tries to strike from the bottom but misses.
Irvin throws an elbow but Artis slips to the side and avoids it well.

Irvin looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Irvin cracks Artis with a big right hand but Artis just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Artis is looking to reverse the position.
Irvin sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Artis is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Artis manages to work his way to half guard, despite Irvin's best efforts.

Irvin seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Artis does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Artis is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Irvin's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Irvin's back!

Artis keeps control of the position as Irvin tries to break free.
What can Irvin do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!

Artis throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Irvin wants to clinch up but Artis keeps it at a distance.
No joy there for Artis, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Irvin gets tackled into the cage by Artis. Artis maintains the clinch.
Artis is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Irvin can do to turn this around?

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Irvin is trying to drag Artis to the mat but Artis just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Come on Artis - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.

Artis tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Irvin blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Irvin has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Artis avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Marshall Artis has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Paul Irvin.
Irvin is breathing heavily.

Artis pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Artis throws a head kick but Irvin moves out of range.
Artis lands with a nice body kick.

Irvin shoots in looking for a takedown. Artis tries to sprawl out of it but Irvin keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Artis manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Irvin looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.

Artis throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Artis pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Irvin looks to land a body kick but Artis moved away.
Artis half committed to a counter leg kick.
Marshall Artis is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Artis throws a looping overhand right but Irvin ducks down to avoid it.
Artis misses with a head kick.
Irvin shoots in for a takedown but Artis shows good takedown defense.

Artis throws a sloppy head kick and Irvin moves out of range easily.

As Artis backs off Irvin throws a huge counter combo but Artis manages to avoid it all.

Despite the aggression on Irvin's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.

Irvin takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.

Artis dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Artis rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Irvin moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Artis swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Irvin counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Artis takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.

Artis throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Artis has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Irvin is working away from the top position though.
Irvin takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Well Artis has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
