PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between German Charles (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Robert Trust (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, German Charles!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Robert Trust!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Jeff Smith and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Trust doesn't manage to clinch there - Charles circles away.
Trust scores with a three punch combo!


It looks like German Charles has been cut.
Trust throws a head kick but Charles moves out of range.

Trust shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Charles really is a fat lump.

Trust stands up from Charles's guard - Trust perhaps looking for a knockout.
Charles misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Trust raises up his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.
Trust misses with a few strikes there.
Charles is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Trust.

Trust is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Charles's half guard.

Charles has one foot on Trust's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Trust misses with a two punch combination.
Charles tries to counter by clinching up but Trust breaks away and moves out of range.

Trust looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Trust is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Charles blocking the ground and pound attempt from Trust.

Trust escapes and gets back to his feet.
Some wild striking there from Trust.
Charles tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Trust manages to circle out of the way.
Trust fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Charles looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.

Trust throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Charles tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Trust is in Charles's guard.
Trust working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Charles working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Trust.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Trust would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Trust lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

Trust stands and steps away. Charles gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Charles takes one on the button.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Charles ducks right into an uppercut from Trust.
Trust tries to clinch up.

Trust lands a big head kick that sends Charles tumbling to the mat! Trust takes a step backwards and waves Charles back to his feet - he wants the finish!


Charles is rocked!
Trust dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Charles. That did some damage!
Trust moves in looking to clinch but Charles pushes him off.

Trust gets in close and instigates a clinch.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Charles is fighting off a takedown attempt but Trust is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Charles to the mat. Charles regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Charles preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Trust pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Charles is keeping the position for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Trust accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Trust stands up from Charles's guard - Trust perhaps looking for a knockout.
Charles dodges the punch combination from Trust.
A lazy body kick from Trust

and Charles counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Trust wants to get back to his feet but Charles passes into half guard.
Trust looks winded!

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Trust is trying to stand.
Trust is trying to escape back to his feet but Charles uses the scramble to pass into side control.
Trust manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Robert Trust dominated that round.
The cut man is working on German Charles's cut.
That's time! Charles's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Trust misses with a series of wild punches.
Trust lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Charles backs up against the cage.

Trust fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Charles sprawls well initially but Trust persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Trust missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Charles looks like he's trying to stand up.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Trust wants to get back to his feet.

Trust postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Charles to stand up.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Trust closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Charles to the mat! Charles manages to get full guard.

Trust stands up and waves to Charles to follow him.
Charles tries for a takedown but Trust circles away easily
and Trust counters with a head kick.
Trust is looking to land body kicks.
And Charles counters with a quick kick to the body but Trust blocks it.
Trust has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Trust clinches with his opponent.

Trust drags the fight down to the ground.
Trust bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Charles's guard.

Trust throwing strikes but missing.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Trust stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Trust lands with a straight right. Charles didn't see that one coming.
Oh Charles is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!


German Charles's cut is getting worse.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Trust moves into range and clinches up with Charles.
Charles seems to have got his legs back now.

Charles decides to pull guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Trust's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Charles utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Trust is in close to Charles's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Trust is looking to work some ground and pound but Charles has wrist control.
Trust controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Charles might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Trust gets to his feet. Charles looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Trust fails with an attempt to clinch.

Trust has managed to clinch.

Trust works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Charles controls Trust momentarily but Trust frees himself.
Trust is in close to Charles's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Trust with a nice head shot there.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Trust landing some decent shots from guard.
Trust has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Trust cracks Charles with a solid left hand.
Charles keeping full guard, as Trust tries to pass.
Trust sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Charles's guard.
Well, if Trust is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Trust wants to work for an arm triangle but Charles is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Robert Trust showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on German Charles's cut.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!



Trust pushes Charles up against the cage in a clinch.

Trust has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Charles uses from the top position.
Charles trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Trust wants to sweep but no luck.
Trust wants to stand up but Charles is controlling him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Trust has control of Charles's left arm, preventing Charles from doing any damage.
Charles not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Trust looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Trust working for submissions but it's allowed Charles to get to half guard.
Charles is taking a breather. Trust says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Charles postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Trust to stand up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Trust moves in looking to clinch but Charles pushes him off.
Trust throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Charles.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Trust.

Trust throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Charles tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Trust is in Charles's guard.
Trust takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Trust throws a strike but Charles rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Charles controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Charles decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Trust, up you get!

Trust darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

Charles manages to escape and get back to his feet!

Trust rushes Charles and presses him up against the cage.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.

Trust is trying to trip Charles. He has hold of a leg but Charles is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Trust persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Charles is looking to stand back up but Trust counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Charles.
Robert Trust has got the better of the ground game so far.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Still in half guard, Trust seems content to control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Trust seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Charles does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Trust throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Trust decides to stand and escape the position.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Charles enables Trust to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Charles manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Trust trying to control the position from guard on top but Charles is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Trust trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Charles manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!

German Charles has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Robert Trust is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Trust wants to stand and escape but Charles is having none of it.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to German Charles.
Well Trust has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
