PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Javier Pena (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Daniel Ryan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ryan comes into a darkened arena with his song building. I'd Love to Knock the Hell out of You by Hank Williams, Jr kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Buckle up people - heeeeeeeeeere we go!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 29 - 30 - 0, fighting out of New York, Javier Pena!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 35 - 27 - 2, fighting out of London, Daniel Ryan!
The judges for this bout are Paulsen Ambrosius, Nard Betker and Radbod Blank.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pena throws a big shot that misses.
Pena lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Ryan shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Pena but Pena pushes him off and we're back to square one.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Ryan.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Ryan.
Javier Pena has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Daniel Ryan.

Ryan fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Pena sprawls well initially but Ryan persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Ryan wants to work for an arm triangle but Pena is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Ryan is looking for a kimura but Pena is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Ryan to get the leverage.
Pena tries to kick Ryan off but Ryan keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Ryan is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Pena is just riding it out for now. Ryan eventually gives up the hold.
Pena wants to get back to his feet.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Ryan is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Pena tries to kick Ryan off but Ryan keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Pena misses with a few strikes there.
Ryan tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Pena throws a body punch but Ryan moves out of range.
And Ryan tries to counter it with a takedown but Pena pushes his down on his head and steps out.
Ryan fails with the takedown.

Pena gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Ryan to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Pena has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the ropes to get back to his feet. Ryan has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the ropes.
Ryan has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Pena after a bit of a struggle.

Ryan breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Ryan shoots in looking for a takedown. Pena tries to sprawl out of it but Ryan keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the ropes. Pena manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Ryan misses with a takedown attempt - Pena sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Ryan blocks a head kick by Pena.
Pena tries to land a front kick but Ryan steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Ryan has his takedown stuffed
and Pena counters with a nice uppercut.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Ryan shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Pena connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Pena throws a head kick that misses.
Nice uppercut there from Pena.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Pena throws a body shot but no joy.
Pena wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Pena scores with a decent looking hook.
A big left from Pena misses.
Ryan walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Ryan shoots in for a double leg but Pena sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Pena tests Ryan's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Daniel Ryan is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Ryan shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Pena as he avoids it easily.
Ryan bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Ryan feints the counter takedown.

Ryan looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Pena has one foot on Ryan's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Pena throws out a token jab with nothing on it.

Ryan shoots in and bounces Pena off the ropes to secure the takedown into guard.

Pena is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Ryan is controlling him.
Pena is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Ryan can do to turn this around?

Ryan is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Pena is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Pena has escaped and now he's on top!

Ryan bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Pena's guard.

Ryan throws a big elbow that misses.
Ryan is looking to pass into half guard but Pena pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Pena is in guard.

Pena wants to stand but Ryan has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Ryan has his foot on Pena's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Pena works his way back into a safe position though.

Ryan working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Pena doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Pena manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Ryan accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Pena is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Ryan is controlling him.

Ryan is pushing down on Pena's leg trying to pass to half guard. Pena is fighting to maintain full guard but Ryan has managed to sneak the leg through.
Ryan thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Pena's head.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
