PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Milford Mejia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rock Down (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Down has chosen The battle as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Milford Mejia!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Rock Down!
The judges for this bout are Radbod Blank, Aafke Stam and Paulsen Ambrosius.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mejia uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Down.
Down looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!

Down moves into the clinch.

Down is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Mejia can't fight it off and eventually Down manages to take the fight to the floor. Mejia looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
My spies in Cozad Amsterdam inform me that Down has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!
Down trying to control but Mejia is working from the bottom.
Mejia looking to hit a scissor sweep but Down is one step ahead there.
Mejia is trying to control the position but Down postures up.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mejia wants to stand up but Down is controlling him.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mejia controls Down momentarily but Down frees himself.
Mejia really is a fat lump.
Mejia is looking to stand up but Down isn't so interested in that idea.

Mejia seems keen to control Down's posture.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Mejia looking to hit a scissor sweep but Down is one step ahead there.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Down accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Down won't allow Mejia to sweep him here.
Mejia is pulling down on Down's head. It's preventing any offense from Down, at least for the moment.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Down fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Mejia manages to avoid it.
Down leaves Mejia with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Mejia avoids the head kick by Down.
Mejia tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Down manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Down circles away from the clinch attempt.
Down looks for the body kick but Mejia saw that one coming.
Mejia half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.

Mejia clinches with his opponent.
Mejia misses with a knee to the head.
Mejia tries for a takedown but Down manages to get underhooks.
Mejia misses with a hook to the ribs.

Down breaks from the clinch.
Mejia keeps the fight on the outside.
Mejia is looking for a counter combo.

Mejia gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Mejia fails to pull guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Milford Mejia. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Mejia throws an elbow that misses.

Mejia has hold of one of Down's legs. Down is fighting the takedown attempt but Mejia gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Mejia might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Down had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Mejia defends it easily.
Down keeping moving, preventing Mejia from controlling successfully.
Mejia stands up over Down, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Mejia's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Mejia passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Mejia trying to control the action but Down is working from the bottom.
Mejia working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Down is looking for a sweep.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Milford Mejia will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action!


Mejia tries to close the distance and clinch but Down swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Down tries to counter by closing the distance.

Mejia has closed the distance and engaged Down in a clinch.
Down is trying to force a seperation but Mejia has the dominant position.
Down is trying to push Mejia away but Mejia has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Mejia tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Down avoids it.
Down looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.

Mejia jumps guard and drags Down to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Down is breathing heavily.

Mejia is trying to keep Down in close.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Down working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Mejia pulls Down in to control the position.
Mejia is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Mejia is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Mejia seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Mejia is trying to control the position but Down postures up.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Mejia is on top in guard.

Mejia is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Down can do to turn this around?

Down throws his legs up looking for a submission but Mejia uses it to pass to side control.

Mejia stands up and we're back to a striking position.

Mejia has taken the fight to the clinch.
Mejia is trying to break free.

Mejia turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Mejia happy to just control the position for now.

Mejia decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Mejia shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Down tries to get to full guard but Mejia has control of the leg.

Mejia trying to control the pace.
Mejia's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Milford Mejia dominated that second round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!



Down tries to sprawl but Mejia drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Mejia performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Milford Mejia overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Mejia trying to control from half guard but Down is working away.
Mejia perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Down tries to roll over but Mejia keeps him under control.

Down takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Mejia is nestled in close to Down, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Well, if Mejia is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Rock Down seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Mejia is looking to clinch but Down is avoiding it.
Mejia moves in looking to clinch but Down pushes him off.

Mejia forces Down back against the cage and clinches.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Mejia decides to pull guard.
Mejia managing to control the position.
Mejia is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Down is looking to control Mejia's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Down avoid being mounted?
Mejia wants to stand but Down has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Mejia looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Down with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Mejia is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Down is just riding it out for now. Mejia eventually gives up the hold.
Down is trying to get back to full guard.
Mejia takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Down has a hand on Mejia's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Mejia takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Mejia tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Down tries to hold on but Mejia postures up.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Down can do anything to dispel that myth.

Mejia looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Mejia looking to finish Down with some ground and pound. This is bad for Down!
Rock Down has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Milford Mejia is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Mejia, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
