PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mountain Rivera (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Russell Patterson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Patterson is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by "Still Unbroken" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. The fight MMA fans around the world have waited their entire lives for!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 28 - 75 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mountain Rivera!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 23 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Russell Patterson!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Frank Dennis and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rivera shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Patterson pinned against the cage. Patterson gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Patterson steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Rivera.
Rivera is trying hard to land a takedown here. Patterson sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Patterson is trying to avoid his opponent's strikes and get into the clinch.

Rivera looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Rivera throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Rivera is nestled in close to Patterson, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Rivera looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Rivera slows the pace down in half guard.
Rivera looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Patterson with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Rivera in particular looking to stall.
Rivera is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

Rivera looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Rivera's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Rivera winds up and cracks Patterson with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mountain Rivera dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Patterson fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Rivera looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Patterson is fending him off so far but Rivera persists. Nope, Patterson circles away and we're back to standing.
Rivera changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Patterson tries to avoid it but Rivera manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Patterson to the ground. Patterson escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Patterson swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
Rivera shoots for a takedown but Patterson saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mountain Rivera. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Rivera shoots in and drives through. Patterson sprawls well.

Rivera decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Patterson wants to control but Rivera is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Rivera takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Patterson seems to have recovered his senses.

Rivera is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Patterson is in trouble now - Rivera has advanced to mount!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Rivera lands a nice shot to the head.
Rivera connects with a bit shot that sees Patterson covering up! More strikes from Rivera and the referee jumps in to stop the fight! Rivera is our winner by TKO!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:41 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Mountain Rivera!
In defeat, Russell Patterson stepped up to the mic, saying 'Nothing changes, just the fans!'.
