PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Cyril Westlake (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Arthur Schopenhauer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Schopenhauer comes into a darkened arena with his song building. London Calling kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Cyril Westlake!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 22 - 6 - 0, fighting out of London, Arthur Schopenhauer!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, James Glass and James Ackerman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Both fighters are only really looking to counter, so after a good 30 seconds of circling eachother endlessly, the referee has stepped in and told them both to be more aggressive.
Schopenhauer changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Westlake tries to avoid it but Schopenhauer manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Westlake to the ground. Westlake escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
A quick step to the side and Westlake tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Schopenhauer on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.
Westlake throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Schopenhauer dives in and grabs Westlake's left leg, looking for a takedown. Westlake pushes down on Schopenhauer's head and hops out.
Westlake throws a looping overhand right but Schopenhauer ducks down to avoid it.
Schopenhauer tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Schopenhauer takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Westlake stuffs the takedown attempt from Schopenhauer. Schopenhauer gets slowly back to his feet.
Cyril Westlake has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Arthur Schopenhauer.

Westlake thuds his right hand into Schopenhauer's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Cyril Westlake is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Schopenhauer fails with a takedown attempt.

and Westlake counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Schopenhauer fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Westlake avoids it really well and circles away.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Schopenhauer shoots in for a takedown but Westlake shows good takedown defense.

Westlake misses with a hook. Schopenhauer ducked under it nicely.
Schopenhauer changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Westlake sets himself, and Schopenhauer steps forward looking for the clinch! Westlake avoids it this time.

Schopenhauer dives in and grabs Westlake's left leg, looking for a takedown. Westlake pushes down on Schopenhauer's head and hops out.
Westlake swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.

Schopenhauer shoots for a double leg takedown but Westlake sprawls well. He's pushed Schopenhauer's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
It looked like Westlake wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.

Westlake knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Schopenhauer on the ground.
Schopenhauer thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Westlake's head.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Schopenhauer seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Westlake does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Schopenhauer is just content to waste time from the top position. Westlake takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

Westlake keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Westlake on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Westlake tries to get out of the position.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Schopenhauer wants to work for an arm triangle but Westlake is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Westlake is trying to stand up here but Schopenhauer is controlling him well.
Schopenhauer wants to control but Westlake is keeping him busy.
Schopenhauer has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Schopenhauer is looking for a kimura but Westlake is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Schopenhauer to get the leverage.
Schopenhauer is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Schopenhauer wants to pass the guard but Westlake is defending well.
Schopenhauer is keen to just control but Westlake is a slippery customer.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

That was a close second round but I would say that Cyril Westlake will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Schopenhauer tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Westlake defends well and Schopenhauer ends up having to push Westlake into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
It looked like Westlake wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.

Schopenhauer is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Westlake pulls his head out easily.
Westlake seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Schopenhauer has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Westlake is working away from the top position though.
Schopenhauer is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Schopenhauer is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Westlake is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Schopenhauer can do to turn this around?
Arthur Schopenhauer has got the better of the ground game so far.

Schopenhauer has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Westlake can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Westlake wants to lay and pray for a moment but Schopenhauer keeps working.

Westlake gets to his feet - back to striking we go!

Nice takedown defense from Westlake. No joy for Schopenhauer on that attempt.
Westlake appears to be looking for a counter punch to the body.

That was a close round but Cyril Westlake did the better work so I'd imagine he'll take it.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Excellent takedown into side control there by Schopenhauer.

Schopenhauer wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Westlake, who protects the arm well.

Schopenhauer is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Westlake is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Schopenhauer throws a strike aimed at the side of Westlake's head but Westlake avoids it well.

Schopenhauer has hold of Westlake's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Westlake seems comfortable defending it but Schopenhauer has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Westlake is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Westlake is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Schopenhauer couldn't care less - he's delighted!
