PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Trey Randall (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Yancey (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). James Yancey told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Trey Randall!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, James Yancey!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Timothy Bukovac and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Randall darts in and clinches Yancey up against the cage.
Yancey avoids the elbow strike from Randall, against the cage.

Yancey escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
James Yancey seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Randall closes the distance and clinches.
Yancey tries to pull guard but Randall holds him up against the cage and eventually Yancey drops back down to his feet.

Yancey escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Yancey should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

Randall forces Yancey back against the cage and clinches.
Yancey wants to take the fight to the mat but Randall manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.

Yancey breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Yancey moves into the clinch successfully.

Yancey manages to break the clinch.
Randall moves in looking to clinch but Yancey pushes him off.
Yancey changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.

Randall fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Yancey, pushing him back against the cage.

Randall wants to break the clinch but can't.

Yancey breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Yancey throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.
Yancey fails with the takedown
and Randall counters with a series of strikes. Yancey will be more careful next time no doubt.
Trey Randall has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of James Yancey.

Yancey moves into the clinch.

Yancey pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Randall gets a clinch.
Come on Randall - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.

Yancey pulls guard effortlessly.

Randall with a nice head shot there.
Randall throws a strike but Yancey rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Yancey wants to control from the top but Randall keeps moving.
Randall pulls Yancey in close to prevent any damage.
Yancey really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Randall. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Randall pushes Yancey off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Yancey moves into the clinch.
Randall wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Yancey has him pressed against the cage.
Yancey dodges an elbow strike from Randall.

Yancey breaks the clinch.
Randall tries to close the distance and clinch but Yancey swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Randall displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Yancey.
Yancey goes for a double leg but Randall avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Randall continues to drive forward.
Trey Randall is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Yancey swings for the body but Randall moves out of range.
Randall is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Yancey.
Yancey drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Randall defends it well.
Randall throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.

Randall tries to clinch there but Yancey circles away.

Yancey closes the distance and clinches.

Randall's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Yancey swats away the attempt to clinch by Randall.
Yancey keeps the fight on the outside.
Yancey dives in and grabs Randall's left leg, looking for a takedown. Randall pushes down on Yancey's head and hops out.
Randall throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Randall pushes Yancey up against the cage in a clinch.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Yancey just leaning against Randall, taking a breather.

Yancey manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Yancey looks winded!
Randall throws a big right hand that misses.
Randall stopping the sweep attempt from Yancey.
Randall trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Trey Randall dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Yancey has taken the fight to the clinch.
Yancey has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Randall avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Randall has not gone for a single takedown so far in this fight, which seems like a very strange tactic when you consider that he has the superior wrestling and BJJ.
Yancey is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Yancey drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Randall gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Randall dips down and scores with a jab to the body.

Randall wants to clinch up but Yancey keeps it at a distance.

and Yancey counters with a big head kick but Randall shrugs it off.

Yancey is trying to drag Randall to the mat but Randall just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Randall creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.

Yancey fails to pull guard.
Randall content to slow the pace in the clinch.
Randall has Yancey pushed against the cage.
Randall is trying to push Yancey away but Yancey has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Randall throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Yancey blocks it with crossed arms.

Randall breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Yancey fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Randall.

Randall escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Yancey fails with the takedown.
Randall tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Yancey manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Yancey throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Randall tries to counter by clinching up but Yancey breaks away and moves out of range.

Randall is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Yancey can do to turn this around?

A frustrated look appears on Randall's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Randall just misses with a punch to the body.
Randall tries to close the distance and clinch but Yancey swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Randall is trying to push Yancey away but Yancey has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Yancey.

Yancey jumps into guard, dragging Randall to the mat.

Yancey is looking to stand back up but Randall counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Yancey.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Randall throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Randall drops an elbow to the side of Yancey's head.
Randall misses with a head shot. Yancey uses the momentum to regain guard.

Yancey takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Randall stands up over Yancey, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Yancey holds on and takes a little breather.
Randall lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Randall postures up and lands a big shot to Yancey's brow.
Randall seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Randall accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Yancey controls Randall momentarily but Randall frees himself.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Randall loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

and Randall counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Randall.

Yancey darts in looking for a takedown but Randall gets double underhooks and turns Yancey into the cage.
Randall wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.

Randall throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.
Yancey goes for a takedown attempt but Randall pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Trey Randall showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Randall has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
