PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Chris Riot (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Vernon Russell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Chris Riot!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Vernon Russell!
The judges for this bout are Chad Campbell, Russell Pearce and Jorge Garcia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Russell misses with a takedown
enabling Riot to counter with a crisp jab.
Riot loads up on a big right hand but Russell slips the punch.
Russell changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Riot slaps away a takedown attempt from Russell, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Russell shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Riot as he avoids it easily.
Chris Riot has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Vernon Russell.
Russell throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Riot sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Riot is looking to counter the offense by Russell and move into the clinch.
Riot misses with a double jab.
Russell tries to clinch there but Riot circles away.
Riot slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Russell tries to score a power double leg takedown but Riot sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Russell somewhat.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
The fighters circle momentarily. Riot darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.


It looks like Vernon Russell has been cut.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Russell tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Russell tries to clinch up.
Russell with a lazy takedown attempt
and Riot counters with a stiff right hand.
Chris Riot seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Russell closes the distance and clinches.

Russell breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Russell fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Riot lands a really nice looking cross but Russell seems unphased.
Riot looks to land a combination but Russell avoids it well.
Russell lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Riot circles away quickly and effectively.
Russell looks to throw the jab but Riot is out of range.
Russell slips a jab and a cross from Riot.
Russell drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Riot defends it well.
Russell shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Riot but Riot pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Russell dodges the punch combination from Riot.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Russell goes for a double leg but Riot avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Riot continues to drive forward.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Riot moves out of range of the body kick from Russell.
Russell misses with a hook.
Russell throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Riot's waist but Riot gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Russell off to one side.
Russell tries to clinch but Riot moves away
and Riot counters with a left and a right that stings Russell.
Russell dives in for a single leg takedown but Riot sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Russell looks to land a combination but Riot avoids it well.
Russell shoots for a double leg takedown but Riot sprawls well. He's pushed Russell's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Russell looks winded!

Riot feints and then winds up with a huge right hand that connects perfectly and sends Russell sprawling to the canvas! Russell rolls over backwards and springs off the cage and manages to regain his footing - how acrobatic! Oh, he's still wobbly - can Riot finish him?!


Russell is rocked!
Russell gets tagged by a hook that puts him to sleep! Riot points and yells something to his unconcious foe before strutting off. Russell wakes up just in time to hear Riot thank his coaches in the post fight interview.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:47 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Chris Riot!
