PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Ulrik Meyer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Penn has chosen Everything in its right place as his entrance music. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that James Penn was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 8 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, James Penn!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Meyer connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Meyer goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Meyer lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Penn tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Penn takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Meyer looks to land a right hand but Penn moved out of range.
Meyer will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Penn closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Penn lands in his opponent's guard.

Penn might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Meyer haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Penn accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

and Meyer counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Ulrik Meyer seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Meyer avoids the head kick by Penn.
Penn swings for the body but Meyer moves out of range.
Meyer connects with a single shot there.
Meyer tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Penn manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Penn escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

I was talking to Meyer's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
A frustrated look appears on Penn's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Penn is working for takedown but Meyer is calmly controlling the position for now.
Ulrik Meyer has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of James Penn.
Penn changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Meyer fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Penn ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Penn stalks Meyer and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Meyer's face. Meyer staggers backwards, shaken.
Good exchange - Meyer coming out on top.
Penn throws a sloppy head kick and Meyer moves out of range easily.

Meyer throws a shot from downtown. Penn moves away and avoids it.
James Penn is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Penn circles away from the clinch attempt.
Meyer lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Meyer is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Despite the aggression on Penn's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.

Penn closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Meyer's guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

My spies in ICON TOP TEAM inform me that Penn has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Penn is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Meyer doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Penn.

That was a close second round but I would say that Ulrik Meyer will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Meyer, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
