PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jon Cormier (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Haruko Hiroshi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jon Cormier!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Haruko Hiroshi!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Don Winkell and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Cormier darts in and clinches Hiroshi up against the cage.
Hiroshi slows down the pace here.
Hiroshi is looking to control Cormier's arms but Cormier gets an underhook and turns him. Now Hiroshi has his back to the cage.
Hiroshi managing to block the knees to the body from Cormier.

Cormier has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Hiroshi uses from the top position.
Cormier has Hiroshi pulled in close to control his posture.

Hiroshi stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Cormier swivels though and keeps the full guard.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Hiroshi postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Cormier is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Hiroshi, into his guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Cormier scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!


It looks like Haruko Hiroshi has been cut.
Cormier avoids a punch combination nicely.
Cormier sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.
Hiroshi pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Hiroshi throws a right and a left that both miss.
Hiroshi lands with a thumping leg kick.
Hiroshi looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
A punch combination from Hiroshi misses.
Cormier on the wrong end of a kick to the body.
Hiroshi throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Hiroshi looks winded!

Cormier shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Cormier showed some decent athleticism there.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Cormier stands up and beckons Hiroshi to join him on the feet.

Cormier drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Hiroshi throws a leg kick that misses.

Cormier changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Hiroshi looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Cormier misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
Cormier throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.

Cormier stands up.
Hiroshi throws a nice outside leg kick.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Hiroshi tries a head kick but it misses.
Hiroshi fails to land with a series of punches.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Hiroshi misses with the combination.

Cormier clinches.
Cormier prevents Hiroshi from breaking the clinch.

Cormier pulls guard successfully.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Jon Cormier will probably get the nod.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Cormier forces Hiroshi back against the cage and clinches.
Hiroshi tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Cormier's elbow.
Hiroshi misses with a knee to the head.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Hiroshi.
Hiroshi working hard to break the clinch.
Hiroshi gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Cormier.
Stalling in the clinch from Cormier.
Hiroshi is trying to break free.
Hiroshi wants to stall.

Cormier ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Cormier no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Hiroshi wants to get up but he can't break Cormier's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Cormier throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Hiroshi wants to stand but Cormier has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Hiroshi is fighting to break Cormier's control of his arms but Cormier is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Cormier has his foot on Hiroshi's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Hiroshi works his way back into a safe position though.

Cormier fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Hiroshi sprawls well initially but Cormier persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Cormier tries to pass to full mount but Hiroshi defends it.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Cormier looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Hiroshi throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Cormier moves into the clinch successfully.

Hiroshi wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Hiroshi wants to break free but Cormier has control.
Hiroshi tries to land knees in the clinch but Cormier avoids the damage to the body.
Hiroshi misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Cormier.
Cormier blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Hiroshi is breathing heavily.
Hiroshi wants to get back to striking at distance but Cormier won't allow it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Hiroshi will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Hiroshi misses with a two punch combination.

Cormier closes the distance and pushes Hiroshi back into the cage.
Cormier is trying to break free.
Cormier on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.

Cormier is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Hiroshi can't fight it off and eventually Cormier manages to take the fight to the floor. Hiroshi looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Cormier thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Hiroshi can do anything to dispel that myth.

Cormier throws a big elbow that misses.
Cormier seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Cormier's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Hiroshi is working an open guard so Cormier takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Hiroshi lands a right hook to the body.

Hiroshi gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Cormier to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Hiroshi takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Cormier is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Cormier stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hiroshi swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Cormier stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Hiroshi throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Cormier lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Hiroshi backs up against the cage.

Cormier shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Hiroshi is trying to defend but Cormier finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Cormier stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Hiroshi to get to his feet.

Cormier darts in and clinches Hiroshi up against the cage.
Hiroshi is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Hiroshi keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Cormier's efforts to push away.
Hiroshi can't find room to land a body shot as Cormier controls the action.
Haruko Hiroshi has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Cormier has clasped his hands together around Hiroshi's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Hiroshi tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Cormier is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Hiroshi has managed to escape the submission attempt.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jon Cormier showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Cormier, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
