PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Frank Hammel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Roberto Souza (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Frank Hammel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Roberto Souza!
The judges for this bout are Anni Minnemäki, Arvi Lind and Roosa Järviläinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Souza fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
A jab lands there for Hammel.
Frank Hammel seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Souza tries a head kick but it misses.
Souza stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Souza wants it to stay on the feet.
Souza feints the counter takedown.
Souza throws a head kick but Hammel moves out of range.
Hammel shoots in but no luck this time.
Souza shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Hammel as he jumps to the side.
As Souza looks to move away, Hammel throws a big counter combo but Souza just gets out of the way.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hammel lands a body shot.
Souza jumps guard but Hammel turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Frank Hammel has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Roberto Souza.

Hammel breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Hammel dives in and grabs Souza's left leg, looking for a takedown. Souza pushes down on Hammel's head and hops out.
Souza throws a half hearted mid kick.
Hammel shoots in but no luck this time.

Hammel rushes Souza and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.

Hammel pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Souza throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Hammel's waist but Hammel gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Souza off to one side.
Souza shoots in looking for a takedown but Hammel manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Souza's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Hammel fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Souza, pushing him back against the cage.
A left hand lands to the body for Hammel.

Hammel pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Souza drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Hammel sneaks out the side door and pushes Souza away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Hammel misses with a head kick.
Souza feints the counter takedown.
Hammel fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Horrible takedown attempt by Hammel or perhaps it was just good defense by Souza, which made it look bad.
Souza jabs Hammel to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Hammel is breathing heavily.
Souza shoots in and drives through. Hammel sprawls well.
Souza fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Hammel misses with a jab, cross combination.
Souza let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hammel looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Souza shoots in for a takedown but Hammel shows good takedown defense.
No luck for Souza with that takedown attempt.
Souza changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Hammel tries to avoid it but Souza manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Hammel to the ground. Hammel escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Souza shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Hammel pinned against the cage. Hammel gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Hammel clinches up with Souza and pushes him back against the cage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Souza is looking to take this one to the mat.
Hammel content to slow the pace in the clinch.

Hammel successfully pulls guard.
Souza working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Souza loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Souza wants to control from the top but Hammel keeps moving.
Souza is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Souza throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Hammel.
Souza motions for Hammel to come forward. Souza throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Frank Hammel is winning the standup battle so far.
Souza doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Hammel counters by clinching up.

Hammel ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Hammel no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Souza thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Hammel has his foot on Souza's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Souza works his way back into a safe position though.

Souza wants to control from the top but Hammel keeps moving.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Souza accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Hammel knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Souza on the ground.

Hammel manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Souza misses with a takedown

and Hammel counters by moving into the clinch.
A frustrated look appears on Souza's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Hammel's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Hammel is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Souza can do to turn this around?

Souza stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hammel swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Hammel will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Souza fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
It looked like Hammel wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Souza stuffs the takedown.
A countering left hand to the body from Souza misses.

Souza closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Hammel throws his opponent off and manages to get back to his feet! Nicely done!
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Souza fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Hammel avoids it really well and circles away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Souza has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Hammel should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Souza has tightened it up now! Hammel should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!
