The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Some wild striking there from Rivara .
Rivara looks to land a combination but Avala avoids it well.
Nice defenses there by Avala.
Avala with the counter takedown but Rivara avoids it easily.
Rivara will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Rivara tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Avala swivels and escapes.
Avala throws a head kick that misses.

Rivara throws a body punch but Avala moves out of range.
Avala wants to counter with a clinch but Rivara pushes him away.

Rivara shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Avala manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Avala has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Rivara off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

Rivara tries to bum rush Avala with a series of wild strikes but Avala uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Rivara tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Avala defends well and Rivara ends up having to push Avala into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Rivara lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.

Rivara went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
Rivara misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Rivara drops Avala with a nice combination! Rivara dives into Avala's guard, looking to finish!

It looks like Jerry Avala has been cut.

Avala is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Rivara gets to his feet and stands over Avala, holding his ankles. He dives in with a big left hand that connects! Avala felt that one! Rivara unloads more punches and elbows and this one is over! The ref has dived in to save Avala from any more punishment!
