PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Ira Vance (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mia Gero (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ira Vance!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Mia Gero!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Jeff Smith and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Gero closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Vance is trying to improve his position.
Vance pushes Gero away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Gero gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Vance tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Gero wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Gero is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Gero is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Vance has escaped the position, nice work there.
Vance tries to bench press Gero off him but Gero keeps the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gero landing with strikes to the head and body from side control.
Gero trying to control the action but Vance is working from the bottom.
Gero working the ground and pound.

Gero wants to lay and pray for a moment but Vance keeps working.
Vance tries to buck Gero off but Gero is having none of it.
Vance is pushing Gero's head away, looking to escape. Gero manages to hold on to the position though.
Gero working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Vance gets back to half guard.
Gero frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Vance bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Gero pulls Vance in to control the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Vance would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Gero looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Gero is looking to stand up but Vance isn't so interested in that idea.
Gero working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Vance.
Vance keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Gero's head.

Gero has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Vance can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Vance postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gero tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Vance throwing strikes but missing.
Gero lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Vance working a defensive guard here.
Gero trying to control the position from guard on top but Vance is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Gero stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Vance swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Gero looks winded!

Vance looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Vance has his feet on Gero's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.

Vance shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Gero's guard.

Gero is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Vance presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Gero has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Vance clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!

Vance manages to stand up with Gero still on his back. Eventually Gero drops to his feet and we're back in the standing position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Mia Gero will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Vance shoots in looking for a takedown. Gero tries to sprawl out of it but Vance keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Gero manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Gero fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Vance, pushing him back against the cage.

Gero decides to pull guard.

Gero pushes Vance off and gets back to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Vance keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Gero is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Vance's half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gero prevents Vance from standing back up.
Vance moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Mia Gero has got the better of the ground game so far.
Gero lands a couple of digs.
Gero is breathing heavily.
Vance throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Vance wants to stand up but Gero is controlling him.
Gero tries to free his leg and advance position but Vance is retaining full guard.

Vance working for a triangle but Gero defends it easily.

Gero gets to his feet - Vance follows without any prompting.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Gero moves into range and clinches up with Vance.
Gero jumps guard but Vance turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Gero wants to take the fight to the mat but Vance manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Ira Vance has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mia Gero.

Vance manages to pull guard.
Gero tries to stand but Vance is controlling from the bottom.
Vance wants to sweep here but Gero controlling him for the moment.

Vance has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Gero can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Vance trying to strike off his back.
Gero is pushing down on Vance's leg trying to pass to half guard. Vance is fighting to maintain full guard but Gero has managed to sneak the leg through.
Gero lands strikes from half guard.
Gero prevents Vance from standing back up.
Vance is trying to get back to full guard.
Vance is not content to let Gero control the position.
Gero working over Vance with some ground and pound. Vance looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Gero is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Vance moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Gero avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Vance looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mia Gero showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!



Gero scores with a takedown into Vance's guard.

Vance has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Gero off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Vance closes the distance and clinches up with Gero, looking for a takedown. Vance pushes Gero against the cage but Gero circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Vance shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Gero has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Vance is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Vance tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Gero just stands there and leans against the cage.
Gero lands a left hand that snaps the head of Vance backwards.

Vance jumps guard.
Vance might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Vance is wriggling around but Gero manages to pass to half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gero slips a nice elbow through Vance's hands, connecting with Vance's forehead.
Ground and pound from Gero.
Vance is staying active underneath Gero, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Gero sitting and controlling from the half guard.
Gero is pressing down on Vance's thigh, looking to free his foot. Vance is holding on for now.
Gero trying to control from half guard but Vance is working away.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Gero is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Vance tries to get to full guard but Gero has control of the leg.
Gero trying to control the action but Vance is working from the bottom.
Vance is trying to maintain the position but Gero is very close to passing his half guard.
Gero wants to control but Vance is keeping him busy.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gero prevents Vance from improving his position.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Gero trying to control the action but Vance is working from the bottom.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Vance misses with a takedown attempt - Gero sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ira Vance. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Gero shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Vance lands a nice looking body shot.
Vance stuffs the takedown attempt from Gero. Gero gets slowly back to his feet.

Vance gets the takedown into side control.
Gero wants to get back to his feet but Vance is dominant here and he's now got Gero's back!

Vance is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.
Gero trying to control the position but Vance manages to sink in the hooks.
Vance has the hooks in. Gero is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.

Gero has hold of Vance's leg, trying to break free but it's let Vance lock up a rear naked choke! This could be big trouble! Gero is turning an unusual color here… he's out! Vance throws him to one side and jumps onto the cage to celebrate with his fans.
