The judges for this bout are Francis DeMontford, Ben Hemmingworth and Eliza Hachem.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vargas lands a head kick!
Vargas fails with the takedown
and Cruz moves into the clinch.
Cruz works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Vargas uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Vargas connects with a high kick.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Cruz gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Vargas tries to stall but Cruz uses the opportunity to gain a better position.

Vargas really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Vargas prevents a body shot from Cruz.
Cruz manages to break the clinch.
Vargas fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Cruz sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.
Vargas looks to land a combination. Cruz sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Vargas closes this distance looking for a takedown but Cruz circles away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ashley Vargas. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Nice takedown defense from Vargas. No joy for Cruz on that attempt.
Cruz throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Vargas tries to counter by clinching up but Cruz breaks away and moves out of range.
Vargas moves into the clinch successfully.

Cruz working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Vargas doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Vargas manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Cruz is on top in guard.

Vargas is looking to stand up but Cruz isn't so interested in that idea.

Cruz passes Vargas's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Cruz uses his free foot to push down on Vargas's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Vargas.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Vargas really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
