PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Brent Burns (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Derui Pake (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Burns's entrance music is P.I.M.P.. A fine choice. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Brent Burns!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Derui Pake!
The judges for this bout are , Frank Antenori and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Burns throws an off balance right hand
and Pake cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Brent Burns seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Burns connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Burns throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Burns connects with a right hand. Pake shakes it off.
The fighters circling - Burns throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
A countering left hand to the body from Pake misses.
Burns misses with an attempted mid kick.
We've been hearing reports that Burns has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
A jab from Pake finds it's way through Burns's defenses.
Burns on the wrong end of a nice hook.
Burns throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Pake looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Burns avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Pake connects with a right hand. Burns shakes it off.
Burns displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Pake throws out the jab.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Burns looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Pake really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Burns. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Pake has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Burns is working away from the top position though.
Burns lands strikes from half guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Pake can do anything to dispel that myth.

Burns thows a huge punch but Pake dodges it nicely.
Burns looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Burns has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Burns looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Pake with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Burns seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Pake does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Pake is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Pake keeping hold of Burns's head, controlling as best he can.
Burns throws a strike but Pake avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Burns trying to control but Pake is working from the bottom.
Burns's corner is telling him to maintain position.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Burns with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Pake is pulling down on Burns's head to control his posture.
Burns wants to control from the top but Pake keeps moving.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Burns is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Pake is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Burns looks to score with a jab to the body but Pake is just out of range.
Pake swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
Burns bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Pake's head.
Pake slips a jab from Burns.
Burns misses with a left hand
and Pake connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Burns fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Pake manages to avoid it.
Burns avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Burns darts in looking for a takedown but Pake gets double underhooks and turns Burns into the cage.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Brent Burns will probably get the nod.
That's time! Burns's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

and Pake counters with a huge uppercut, hook combination that drops Burns! The ref has seen enough - he's dived in to stop the fight! Brutal strikes by Pake!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:28 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Derui Pake!
After winning the bout, Derui Pake thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
