PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Igor Wietrzny (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sami Vasara (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Wietrzny kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Hunter-Fallen. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 25 - 33 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Igor Wietrzny!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 30 - 34 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Sami Vasara!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Winston Howard and Topper Green.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Wietrzny has closed the distance and engaged Vasara in a clinch.
Vasara misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Wietrzny.

Wietrzny tightens his grip and picks Vasara up, before dumping him to the ground. Vasara manages to land in guard.
Wietrzny sitting in guard here, content to control.
Wietrzny stopping the sweep attempt from Vasara.
Wietrzny trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Vasara is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Wietrzny has Vasara pushed against the cage.
Vasara tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Wietrzny avoids it.
Wietrzny digs a right hand underneath Vasara's ribcage. Vasara let out a lung full of air as it connected.
Vasara wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Wietrzny has him pressed against the cage.
Vasara wants to break the clinch but can't.

Wietrzny gets through Vasara's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.

Vasara is looking to break free of the clinch but Wietrzny has double underhooks.
Vasara wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
A short body shot lands from Wietrzny as the two fighters clinch.
Wietrzny content to slow the pace in the clinch.
Vasara blocks a body shot from Wietrzny.
Vasara's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!

Wietrzny pushes Vasara back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Wietrzny lands a nice shot to the body.

I was talking to Wietrzny's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
Vasara looks winded!

Wietrzny turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Wietrzny manages to end up in side control.
Vasara is letting Wietrzny control him for a moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Wietrzny looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Wietrzny is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Vasara has escaped the position, nice work there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Wietrzny decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Wietrzny seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Vasara keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Wietrzny perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Wietrzny's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Wietrzny uses his free foot to push down on Vasara's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Vasara.

Vasara tries to hold on but Wietrzny postures up.
Wietrzny content just to control the position here.
Wietrzny moves to the back.

Vasara defending nicely against the rear naked choke attempt.
Wietrzny is trying to stick to Vasara's back but Vasara is turning into Wietrzny. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Wietrzny's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Vasara.

Wietrzny wants to sweep but no luck.
Vasara is looking to stand up but Wietrzny won't let him.
Wietrzny has control of Vasara's left arm, preventing Vasara from doing any damage.
Wietrzny is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Vasara can do to turn this around?

Wietrzny wants to sweep here but Vasara controlling him for the moment.
Igor Wietrzny overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Vasara stands up and waves to Wietrzny to follow him.
Sami Vasara is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Vasara lands with a slapping head kick.

Wietrzny moves into the clinch.
Wietrzny makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.


It looks like Sami Vasara has been cut.
Wietrzny lands a shoulder strike.

Vasara's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Vasara takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.

Wietrzny waves his right hand out in front of him, looking to distract Vasara. Oh, he's unloaded a beast of a left hand - it worked! He's dropped Vasara to the canvas! Can he finish him!?

Wietrzny passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Vasara is still in real trouble! Can Wietrzny finish him?
Vasara seems a little lost for a moment, as Wietrzny dominates the positioning.
Wietrzny in side control, throwing shots but Vasara defends.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!



Wietrzny shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Vasara napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Vasara seems to have recovered his senses.
Wietrzny content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.

Wietrzny goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Vasara has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Wietrzny but great work by Vasara.
Wietrzny holds on tight, trying to prevent any damage.

Vasara wants to stand but Wietrzny is controlling his arm.
Wietrzny gets back to half guard.
Wietrzny tries to get to full guard but Vasara has control of the leg.
Wietrzny moves into full guard.
Vasara wants to get up but he can't break Wietrzny's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Wietrzny pulls Vasara in close to prevent any damage.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Vasara looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Wietrzny shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Wietrzny wants to pass the guard but Vasara is keeping the position.
Wietrzny is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Igor Wietrzny is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Wietrzny stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Vasara swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Wietrzny is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Wietrzny advances to half guard.
Sami Vasara has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Wietrzny seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Well Wietrzny has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
